Baltimore, MD, â The Philadelphia KiXX (2-0) defeated the Baltimore Blast (2-2), 8-7, in front of 8,216 fans at the 1st Mariner tonight. Ze Roberto registered the game-winner, one of his three goals in the contest, on a dish from newcomer John Barry Nusum at 11:56 of the fourth quarter. Stuart Dobson earned the victory in net for Philadelphia, turning away 15 of the 22 shots he faced, while Sagu (2-1) took the loss for the Blast with seven saves on 15 shots.
Baltimore newcomer Adilson De Lima opened the scoring with a pass off the boards from teammate Carlos Farias to give the defending champs an early 1-0 advantage at 2:01 of the opening quarter. Denison Cabral extended the Blast's lead, 2-0, on a give-and-go pass from defender Neil Gilbert at 7:10. Baltimore held the 1-0 lead after one full period of play.
Both teams entered the second stanza one-man down after Guiliano Celenza (tripping) and Dobson (intentional hand ball) each received a two-minute penalty with just over a minute remaining in the first; neither team produced a score. Philadelphia native Pat Morris replaced Dobson between the posts for the KiXX. Midfielder Ze Roberto ended Philadelphia's scoring drought with a notch from newcomer Gary Brooks at 3:47, then set up John Barry Nusum for a header in front of the net just 21 seconds later (4:08) to tie the score at 2-2. Blast forward Carlos Farias blasted a left-footer on a feed from Lee Tschantret to again put Philadelphia down one, 3-2, at 11:10 of the quarter. KiXX player/coach Don D'Ambra tied the score, 3-3, on a dish from Roberto at 13:59, but David Bascome regained the Baltimore one-point advantage, 4-3, with a strike a mere 16 seconds later (14:15) and close the half with Philadelphia trailing, 4-3.
Shawn Boney lofted a ball over Sagu and into the back of the net to bring the clubs back even, 4-4, just 52 seconds into the third period. D'Ambra then gave the KiXX their first lead, 5-4, of the night with his second goal from Roberto at 4:59. Morris then extended the club's lead to two, 6-4, on a dish from Brooks at 5:38 of the stanza. Philadelphia held the two-point, 6-4, advantage entering the final quarter of action.
Former KiXX defender Tony McPeak notched an unassisted score just nine seconds in the fourth period to cut the Philadelphia lead to one, 6-5. A mere 38 seconds later, Tschantret connected with Gilbert to tie the score at 6-6 (:47). Walker continued the Blast scoring spree with a goal from Cabral at 5:54. Shanker tied the score, 7-7 with a power-play goal from Goran Vasic at 10:52; Philadelphia received the one-man advantage after Billy Nelson was called for a two-minute tripping penalty at 10:43. Roberto then blasted a shot into the top corner of the net to regain the club's lead, 8-7, at 11:56 of the quarter. Despite Baltimore's use of a sixth attacker (Tschantret), Philadelphia held on to earn an 8-7 victory.
