Philadelphia KiXX News Release
Philadelphia, PA, January 11, 2004 â The Philadelphia KiXX (10-6) were forced to overtime for the second consecutive contest today, where the club went on to defeat the Dallas Sidekicks (11-9), 5-4, in front of 3,921 fans at the Wachovia Spectrum. Nikola Vignjevic recorded the game winner, a shoot-out goal at 13:01 of the extra stanza. Goalkeeper Peter Pappas (9-5) earned the victory in net for Philadelphia, turning away 15 of the 19 shots he faced, while David Doyle, in net while Sagu served a two-minute tripping penalty, took the loss for Dallas.
KiXX player/coach Don D'Ambra quickly opened the scoring with an unassisted strike less than a minute (:54) into the first quarter. The tally marked the 250th goal for the Philadelphia native as a member of the KiXX. The opening quarter would come to a close with Philadelphia holding the one-point advantage, 1-0.
Shawn Boney lit the lamp just nine seconds into the second period, heading in his own rebound off a save from Sagu. Goran Vasic was credited with the assist on the play. Both defenses tightened as the 2-0 KiXX lead held after two full quarters of action.
David Doyle ended the Sidekicks' scoreless drought with the only goal of the third period, an unassisted strike just past the four-minute mark (4:16) that cut the Philadelphia lead to one, 2-1.
Les Lunsford bagged his second goal in as many games to regain the two-point, 3-1, KiXX advantage. Lunsford recorded the unassisted tally at 4:06 of the final stanza. Doyle quickly responded with his second notch of the day, an unassisted restart goal at 4:46, but Joel Shanker answered just as fast, with a tally 17 seconds later (5:03) to secure the two-point Philadelphia lead, 4-2. Doyle completed the hat trick, his third tally of the contest, connecting on a dish from teammate Nick Stavrou at 7:02 to bring the Sidekicks within one, 4-3. Dallas finished the comeback when Beau Brown received a pass from Martin Nash and knocked in past Pappas. Regulation would end with the 4-4 tie, forcing the second consecutive overtime contest for Philadelphia.
After over 13 minutes of heavily defensive play, Philadelphia received a shoot-out opportunity when Sagu was penalized two minutes for tripping D'Ambra on a fast break. With Doyle replacing Sagu, Vignjevic blasted a shot just inside the far post to give the KiXX a 5-4 victory. Vignjevic's tally marks his first goal while donning a Philadelphia uniform.
Notes: The KiXX allowed an opposing player (Doyle) to record a hat trick for the third consecutive contest and fourth time overall this season; the club's record when allowing an opponent to record three goals is now 1-3. Philadelphia is now 1-1 when forced to overtime this season.
