Milwaukee, WI, February 8, 2004 â The Philadelphia KiXX (15-8) defeated the League-leading Milwaukee Wave (17-6) today in front of 6,902 fans at U.S. Cellular Arena. With the victory, Philadelphia improves to 2-13 when playing away from home versus Milwaukee in franchise history. Defender Drew Kopp recorded the game winner at 12:10 of the fourth quarter. Peter Pappas (14-6) earned the victory in net for Philadelphia, turning away 22 of the 26 shots he faced, while Dan Green (10-3) took the loss for Milwaukee, stopping six of 10 chances.
Milwaukee's Michael King opened the scoring on a feed from defender Chris Morman at 5:20 of the first, giving the Wave the early 1-0 advantage. KiXX captain Kevin Sloan knotted the game even, 1-1, with a tally from Goran Vasic at 10:22. The 1-1 tie held after one full quarter of play.
Andy Guastaferro gave Philadelphia their first lead of the day, 2-1, just 30 seconds into the second stanza on dish from teammate Ze Roberto. MISL points leader Greg Howes quickly retied the score, 2-2, with a strike from King at 5:45. St. Louis native Joel Shanker rounded out the first half scoring on a pass from Vasic at 8:26 to put Philadelphia ahead, 3-2.
The clubs exchanged scores in the third period, securing the one-point Philadelphia advantage, 4-3, entering the final quarter of play. Leighton O'Brien connected first, unassisted at 7:55, to knot the score at 3-3, but Shanker quickly responded with his second notch of the contest less than a minute later (8:46). Defender Pat Morris recorded the assist on the play.
KiXX defender Drew Kopp gave the team its largest lead of the day, 5-3, with a goal, his third in two games, that proved to be the game winner at 12:10 of the fourth quarter. Howes connected with Todd Dusosky to cut the lead to one, 5-4, but Philadelphia held on to earn a 5-4 victory.
Notes: The KiXX swept their two games this weekend and have now won four consecutive decisions. The KiXX now post a 2-13 record on the road versus Milwaukee in franchise history. Philadelphia netminder Peter Pappas turned away an impressive 46 of the 53 shots he faced in the club's two victories this weekend.
The club returns to the Wachovia Spectrum to entertain Eastern Division foe, the Cleveland Force, in their Ninth Annual School Day Game on Wednesday, February 11.
