April 8, 2005 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2)
Philadelphia KiXX News Release
Milwaukee, WI â The Philadelphia KiXX (21-15) pulled within one game of the top spot in the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) standings with a 5-3 victory versus the League-leading Milwaukee Wave at the U.S. Cellular Arena tonight. KiXX player/coach Don D'Ambra recorded the game-winning goal with a header at 11:22 of the fourth quarter. Peter Pappas (18-13) earned the victory in net for Philadelphia, turning away 15 of the 18 shots he faced, while Nick Vorberg (19-8) took the loss for the Wave with eight saves on 12 chances.
Philadelphia bolted to an early 1-0 lead, as forward Joel Shanker registered a tally from player/coach Don D'Ambra just 12 seconds into the opening period. Rookie defender Ptah Myers then notched his sixth goal of the season, third versus the Wave, with a shot just inside the far post at 2:37. Less than a minute later (3:19), Milwaukee's Michael King posted the Wave's first score of the evening on a feed from Greg Howes to cut the KiXX advantage to one, 2-1.
After a scoreless second quarter, the Wave knotted the game at 2-2 when Marcelo Fontana recorded a goal on a pass from teammate Guiliano Oliviero at 5:43 of the third stanza. Johnny Torres then provided the Wave their first lead of the evening, 3-2, connecting on a feed from forward Ricardinho at 7:21 of the period. Philadelphia native Pat Morris blasted a shot from the yellow line past Vorberg and into the back of the net to retie the game, 3-3, at 12:23.
D'Ambra regained the club's one-goal advantage, 4-3, knocking-in a header on a pass from defender Drew Kopp at the 11-minute, 22-mark of the fourth quarter. With Wave defender Lovelace Ackah serving as sixth attacker, Philadelphia added a pair of goals to earn a 6-3 victory over the League leaders. Pappas struck first with a full-field throw that found the back of the net at 12:31; the tally marked just the second time the Toronto native has registered a goal in his nine-year indoor career and only the second time the Wave has allowed a goalkeeper to score a goal in franchise history. Shanker then concluded the night's scoring with his second goal of the contest at 14:35.
The club returns to the Wachovia Spectrum to conclude the home-and-home series versus Milwaukee on Saturday, April 9. The night dubbed "Christian Night" includes a post-game concert featuring national recording artist, Sanctus Real and testimonials from a few KiXX players and the team's chaplain, Rich Sparling. Game-time is scheduled for 7:05 pm ET, with the doors opening at 6:00 pm ET.
