Salem RidgeYaks News Release
Salem, VA-The Salem Avalanche, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros, had the bases loaded and two out in the ninth but could not score the equalizing run Tuesday night against Kinston in a 6-5 Indians win. Wladimir Sutil was called out on a dropped third strike to end the rally for Salem (11-13) against Kinston (8-14).
In the visitors half of the 12th, Jerad Head opened with a walk against Josh Appell and moved to second on a passed ball. After a strikeout and Beau Mills groundout to the right side of the infield, Jared Goedert singled to center and Kinston grabbed the lead.
With two down, the Salem rally began in the bottom of the inning. Mark Ori singled to center and was replaced on the bases by Cesar Quintero. Then, Jimmy Van Ostrand singled Quintero to third. After Orlando Rosales walked, Wladimir Sutil ran the count to 0-2. Salem reliever Jim Deters tossed a wild pitch to apparently score Cesar Quintero, but plate umpire Matt Arcovio deemed Sutil to have swung and the infielder was tagged out to end the game. It was Salem's third consecutive loss-the first such losing streak of the season for the Avs.
Salem snared a 5-0 lead in the first inning as the first five batters clubbed hits against starter Carlton Smith. But, Kinston chipped away at the edge and eventually tied the game on a Jerad Head two-run double in the seventh.
For the Avs, Jordan Parraz went 1-for-6 to extend his consecutive games on-base streak to 21. Salem is now 2-2 in extra innings in '08.
The series concludes Wednesday night as the Avs send lefty David Qualben to the hill to face Kinston's Jeanmar Gomez.
