Kinston Indians News Release
- Let's Do This One More Time With Feeling...Kinston and Frederick will decide the Carolina League title tonight in the deciding game five of this series. The Indians are looking to repeat as champions while rebounding from an 0-2 deficit for the second straight year, and the Keys are seeking their first title since 1990 (when they defeated Kinston in five games). The Indians evened this series at two games all with a gritty 4-3 win Tuesday night before getting rained out by Hurricane Ophelia last night. A win tonight would make Kinston the league's first outright back-to-back champion since Winston-Salem in 1985 and 1986. Myrtle Beach won a co-championship in 1999 and then won the title outright in 2000.
- A Look Back...Talk about things not being over until they're over. The K-Tribe broke Tuesday's game open with four runs in the bottom of the fifth, only to see Frederick respond immediately with a run in the sixth and two more in the seventh. The Keys had chance after chance to either tie or take the lead in the final four innings, but credit the Kinston bullpen for making just enough pitches to strand 10 runners on base (including six in scoring position) from the sixth inning on. Frederick left the bases loaded in the sixth and eighth, left runners on first and second in the seventh, and had a runner thrown out at third with one out in the ninth before leaving men at first and second to end the game.
- Tough Loss...The Indians will be without the big bat of 3B Kevin Kouzmanoff in the middle of the lineup tonight, as a death in his family will pull the slugger back home to Colorado. Replacing Kouzmanoff at third base tonight is Luis Cotto (who has not played in the playoffs this year but was the starting shortstop for Kinston's run to the Mills Cup in 2004), and DH Rodney Choy Foo will move up to Kouzmanoff's usual number-three spot in the order. IF Micah Schilling has been activated from the inactive list to take the roster spot. Kouzmanoff was leading Kinston with a .333 average in the playoffs.
- Random K-Tribe Goodness...The K-Tribe bullpen has a 1.59 ERA in the playoffs...Kinston is 3-0 at home in the post-season...the Indians hit home runs in the first five games of the playoffs...Kinston is 4-0 when leading after seven innings.
