October 13, 2006 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Peoria Kings News Release

Peoria, IL. The ABA Peoria Kings have announced the signing of legendary Illinois high school coach Dick Van Scyoc as assistant coach for the upcoming season. Van Scyoc will assist Kings' head coach Sergio McClain, who played for the long-time Peoria Manual coach during his final season in 1994 which resulted in a state title.

Van Scyoc is the winningest boys coach in Illinois High School Association history with 826 career wins in his illustrious 45 year coaching career. The man known as "The Godfather" coached Manual to six Elite eight berths including a second place finish in 1991, third in 1986 and 1988 and fourth place in 1972. The 1972 was the only team to come within 20 points of Dolton Thornridge and Quinn Buckner, generally considered to be the greatest team in Illinois history. Sergio's father, Wayne McClain, now assistant coach at the University of Illinois played on the 1972 team.

"I'm excited that one of my ex-players has given me a chance to coach in the pros and bypass the college level," said Van Scyoc.

"It is a privilege and an honor to be able to work with a coaching legend and one of my former coaches," said Sergio McClain. "I can't wait to get started." The Kings start training camp on October 21 in preparation for their first game at Benton Harbor on November 4th. The team's home opener is scheduled for November 17 against the Twin City Ballers at the Peoria RiverPlex.
