
Killer Bees Take First Preseason Game Over Laredo

HIDALGO, Texas- The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees defeated the Laredo Bucks 5-4 in a shootout on Thursday night to bring home a victory in their first preseason game of the season. Dave Labrecque and Brandon Campos scored in regulation and Travis Eggum scored in the shootout for the victory.
Laredo struck first as Brandon Kosolofsky was able to beat Dan Dunn. The Bees and Bucks traded chances for a majority of the first period but Laredo netmider Ryan Rondeau turned away all Bees chances.
The Bees tied the game up at 8:14 in the second period as Dave Labrecque ripped a shot past Rondeau off a pretty pass by Marc-Andre Carre. Travis Eggum picked up the secondary assist as the two former teammates, Carre and Eggum, picked up where they left off.
Halfway through the second period the Bees made a goalie change as John Murray entered the game reliving Dan Dunn. Dunn allowed only one goal and made 16 saves.
The two teams traded chances through the start of the third period before Brandon Campos broke the deadlocked tie with a shorthanded goal at 13:24 of the third. Campos worked the puck towards the net and after a deflection off the defender the puck worked its way past Laredo goalie Nick Gigone.
The Bees were on the man advantage when Laredo broke the puck out of the zone and Ryan Sparling came in on a breakaway. Sparling was brought to the ice and awarded a penalty shot. On the ensuing chance Sparling was able to score to tie the game at two with 4:05 left in the third.
The game remained tied at two and the two squads headed to overtime. Through the five-minute extra frame neither side was able to find the back of the net.
The game progressed to its first shootout of the season. After Aaron Lee missed his first chance Mark Magnowski buried his chance. Laredo answered with a Spillar goal however to tie it at one. After a Sam Cannata and Brandon Campos each had their chances turned away but Bees goalie John Murray turned away each Laredo shooter.
In the final round Travis Eggum ripped one off the post to once again give the Bees the lead and John Murray turned away the Kelly Miller opportunity as the Bees took the victory.
The Killer Bees return the favor heading back to Laredo for the second and last exhibition game tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. Fans can follow the game on twitter and facebook.
