Fort Worth Brahmas News Release

Hidalgo, Texas - For the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees, Saturday night's 5-2 win over the Fort Worth Brahmas was all about the powerplay. The Killer Bees scored four goals with the man-advantage en route to a 5-2 victory over the Brahmas in a New Year's Eve CHL contest at the Dodge Arena.

Nathan Rosychuk, Aaron Phillips, Jeff Mushaluk, and Darcy Smith registered the four powerplay goals in the game for the Killer Bees. Trevor Weisgerber tallied the fifth Rio Grande Valley goal, a shorthanded, unassisted marker in the second period.

Jimmy Sokol and Matt Reynolds (PP) found the back of the net for Fort Worth.

The Brahmas put forth a determined effort against the Killer Bees despite playing with just thirteen skaters. Left wing Wes Mason (injured) and defenseman Justin Coutu (illness) did not make the trip to the Valley with the Brahmas. Blueliner Jason Courtemanche was placed on waivers prior to the game. Additionally, Fort Worth d-man Matt Coughlin saw limited time in the game due to his injury problems.

After a scoreless first period, Rio Grande Valley exploded in the second period with three goals (Rosychuk, Weisgerber, and Phillips). Fort Worth answered back with the Sokol goal. In the third period, the Brahmas drew to within one at 3-2 on a Matt Reynolds powerplay goal. Rio Grande Valley, however, snuffed out any Brahmas hopes at a comeback with two more powerplay goals to close out the game, from Mushaluk and Smith.

Despite taking the defeat, Fort Worth netminder Larry Sterling had a marvelous game for the Brahmas. Sterling stopped 50 of the 55 Rio Grande Valley shots he faced. The 55 shots allowed by the Brahmas were the most they have given up this season, and the second most allowed in a game in team history. Sterling's 50 save effort is the most saves he has made in a game during his short professional career.

Killer Bees goaltender Evan Lindsay earned the win, stopping 36 of the 38 Brahmas shots he faced. Lindsay's efforts helped the Killer Bees improve to 16-11-1 on the year.

The banged up Brahmas now have a record of 9-17-4 for the season. Fort Worth will have two days off to recover, as their next game will be on Tuesday, January 3, vs. the Memphis RiverKings at 7:30 p.m. at the Fort Worth Convention Center.
