Corpus Christi IceRays News Release
Corpus Christi, TX - For the second consecutive night the Corpus Christi Rayz fought back late in the third period trying to tie a close contest at home against a division rival. Unfortunately, for the Rayz, for the second straight night, they fell just shy. The Killer Bees rode two second period goals to victory as Evan Lindsay made 30 saves, including several down the stretch to give the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees a 3-1 over Corpus Christi on Sunday. The Rayz four-game, homestand continues next weekend with back to back games against the Laredo Bucks.
The teams played a scoreless first period. Both teams had two power play opportunities. The Bees outshot the Rayz 11-9.
The scoreless tie didn't last very long in the second period as the Killer Bees scored 18 seconds into the middle frame. Matt Medley picked up the puck at the red line and rushed into the zone, snapping a shot low, glove side for his tenth goal this season. The Bees then added a goal in the final minute of the period, when Nathan Rosychuk scored on the power play at 19:27. Rosychuck roofed the puck over Brent Zelenewich for his fifth goal of the season from the ride base of the crease. The Bees second period goals gave them a 2-0 lead at the end of two. Rio Grande outshot Corpus Christi 10-7 in the second period.
Just as they did the night before, the Rayz came out inspired in the third period in an effort to tie the game. Ryan Carter got Corpus Christi on the board at 16:34 with his 18th goal of the season from Tim Laurila and Tim Vitek. The Rayz pulled Zelenewich and had chances down the stretch, however Evan Lindsay was remarkable for the Bees leading them to victory. Aaron Phillips put the game away for the Bees with an unassisted, empty net goal at 19:40. The win for the Killer Bees was their first away from Rio Grande Valley in 11 games since a January 13th win in Corpus Christi. The Bees moved into a third place tie with the Austin Ice Bats for second place in the Southeast Division and third in the Southern Conference.
Lindsay made 30 saves on 31 shots for the win to improve his record to 19-15-3. Zelenewich suffered the loss, making 27 saves on 29 shots, and watched his season mark fall to 7-15-1. The defeat moved the Rayz record to 20-31-2, 13 points back from Rio Grande Valley and Austin for the final playoff spot in the South. The Killer Bees record improved to 25-21-5. The Rayz went 0-5 on the power play. The Bees went 0-5. Corpus Christi outshot Rio Grande Valley 31-30 in the game.
