Richmond Kickers News Release
RICHMOND, VA - (Thursday, July 23, 2015) - The Richmond Kickers return to regular season action this Saturday, July 25 when they travel to Red Bull Arena to battle New York Red Bulls II at 4:00 p.m. Fans are encouraged to join the Red Army at the official game watching party at Baja Bean Co., located at 1520 West Main Street in the Fan.
The Kickers and the Red Bulls II close out the three game series this Saturday, having last met at City Stadium when the Kickers defeated the visitors 4-2. Brian Ownby, Jason Yeisley and Eli Garner notched back-to-back first half goals to give the home side an early lead. Following the break, Red Bulls II forward Derrick Etienne pulled a goal back before George Davis IV rounded out the scoreline when he converted a second half penalty kick to seal the decisive victory.
Previously, the two clubs met at Red Bull Arena in a mid-week clash in April when the Kickers edged the home side 1-0. Ownby's second half penalty kick combined with a solid defense backstopped by Travis Worra to shut out the expansion side on the road.
A gap in the regular season schedule allowed the Kickers to host West Bromwich Albion in an international friendly at City Stadium last week, dropping a narrow 2-1 loss to the English Premier League club. One week prior, the Kickers snapped a five game winless streak with a decisive 3-1 victory against Saint Louis FC. Surrendering an early goal, the Kickers rallied behind Davis' equalizer just before the break and added two more in the second half when Yeisley and Michael Callahan earned the visitors a much needed three points.
Meanwhile, the Red Bulls II are coming off a 2-0 win over the Harrisburg City Islanders last week, led by two second half goals in a five minute span by Leo Stolz and Daniel Bedoya to move into fifth place in the Eastern Conference standings.
New York made their USL debut in 2015 as one of eight MLS-owned and operated clubs. An official affiliate of the New York Red Bulls of Major League soccer, the Red Bulls II roster is comprised of USL players, MLS loan players and Red Bulls Academy players.
