Richmond Kickers News Release
RICHMOND, VA - (Thursday, April 10, 2014) - The Richmond Kickers travel to take on the Charlotte Eagles this Saturday, April 12 at 7:00 p.m., broadcast live from Queens Sports Complex on YouTube.com. The Kickers return to City Stadium one week later to host the Pittsburgh Riverhounds on Saturday, April 19 at 5:00 p.m. and tickets are on sale now at RichmondKickers.com.
With an extensive rivalry spanning two decades, dating back to the clubs' inception in 1993, the Kickers hold an all-time series record of 22-12-10 over the Eagles. The two clubs last met at City Stadium in August 2013 when the Eagles dashed the Kickers' hopes of a USL PRO Championship appearance, handing a 2-1 loss to the Regular Season Champions in the Semifinal round.
The perennial Championship contenders have a long history of battling in high stakes games. The Kickers and the Eagles met in the 2007 USL-2 Semifinals when the Kickers came away with a 2-1 overtime win, boosting Richmond to their third consecutive appearance in the finals. In 2006, the Kickers hosted Charlotte in the Championship when the same scoreline fell to the home side in regulation, granting the Kickers their third league title in franchise history. Three years later, the rivals met again in the title match, when the Kickers came back from a one goal deficit to reclaim the USL-2 crown, 3-1, over the Eagles in 2009.
The Kickers opened the 2014 season with a 2-2 draw on the road in Charleston before returning to City Stadium for a 3-1 win over Pittsburgh last weekend. Forward Michael Seaton opened scoring in the first half with midfielder Kyle Porter notching a pair of goals on either side of a Riverhounds tally to award the Kickers three points for their home opener. Meanwhile, Charlotte opened their 22nd campaign last weekend, dropping a narrow 1-0 loss to the Dayton Dutch Lions at Queens Sports Complex.
Saturday's match marks the first of a three-game series between the Eagles and the Kickers, who will face off twice more at City Stadium on May 24 and August 9. In the meantime, the Kickers return to Richmond on Saturday, April 19 to host the Pittsburgh Riverhounds. Loveland Distributing will once again be the official sponsor of the outdoor bar area, located on the south side of the main concourse. The expansive area serves as a unique, gathering place for fans before and during games, offering a variety of food and beverage options, including the Kickers-specific craft beer, Kick It Hunny and live music.
