RICHMOND, VA - (Friday, June 19, 2015) - The Richmond Kickers (6-2-6, 24 points) return to City Stadium this Saturday, June 20 to host the Wilmington Hammerheads FC (1-7-4, 7 points) and Summer Fest, presented by Union Bank & Trust and Bounce 2 The Moon. The Kickers and the Hammerheads close out a three-game series on Saturday, having last met at City Stadium in early April when the Kickers defeated their longtime rivals 3-0. A pair of goals by USL Player of the Week Jason Yeisley, combined with a key penalty kick save by goalkeeper Travis Worra carried the Kickers to an early lead before a 90th minute goal by Eli Garner solidified the victory.
Three weeks earlier, the Kickers opened the 2015 campaign with a 2-2 draw on the road in Wilmington. Midfielders Troy Cole and Justin Moose gave the Hammerheads a two goal advantage inside the first 20 minutes, forcing the Kickers to rally back with a pair of goals on either side of the half, courtesy of Jalen Robinson and Matthew Delicate.
Saturday's match ends a grueling three-games-in-eight-days home stand for the injury-riddled Kickers who were ousted from the U.S. Open Cup Wednesday by Major League Soccer's Columbus Crew three days after battling FC Montreal to a scoreless draw at City Stadium.
Meanwhile, the Hammerheads enter this weekend's match eager to snap an eight game winless streak. Most recently, the New York Red Bulls II edged them 1-0 at Legion Stadium, as the home side could not recover after conceding a goal in the 72nd minute. The Hammerheads will be without goalkeeper Larry Jackson, after he drew a 90th minute red card ejection last week.
Following Saturday's match, the Kickers embark on a four-week road trip before returning to City Stadium to host West Bromwich Albion of the English Premier League on Sunday, July 19. Tickets are on sale now at RichmondKickers.com.
Players to Watch Kickers: Houston Oldham (#40) made his professional debut in the Kickers draw against FC Montreal last week and added an additional 45 minutes during the club's U.S. Open Cup Fourth Round match against Columbus Crew FC of Major League Soccer on Wednesday. The rookie forward made 67 appearances with the University of Richmond, posting 20 goals and four assists during his collegiate career. Midfielder George Davis IV (#11) leads the team with four goals and an assist in 14 regular season games, adding a fifth goal and second assist during the club's U.S. Open Cup Third Round victory over Jacksonville in May. Now in his second season with the Kickers, the USL veteran led the team in scoring in 2014 with 14 goals and six assists through all competitions in 2014. Veteran defender William Yomby (#2) earned USL Team of the Week honors this week after a pair of standout performances against Charleston and Montreal as the Kickers allowed just one goal in two games. In his seventh season in Richmond, the 2009 USL Defender of the Year leads the team with 1,328 minutes while anchoring the backline in six shutouts.
Hammerheads: Earning USL Team of the Week honors for his well-taken volley against the Kickers in the season opening 2-2 draw, midfielder Justin Moose (#10) signed with the Hammerheads prior to the 2015 season. The MLS veteran was drafted by D.C. United out of Wake Forest University in 2006 before claiming a Championship title with the then-USL side Vancouver Whitecaps during a three-year stint. Forward Nick Zimmerman (#23) signed with the Hammerheads in 2015 after spending four years with the Carolina RailHawks (NASL). The 2012 Most Valuable Player made 60 appearances with the RailHawks after a brief stint with Major League Soccer's New York Red Bulls and Philadelphia Union and currently ranks second on the team with three goals this season. Earlier this week, the club announced a trade deal for Seattle Sounders FC 2 forward Qudus Lawal who is slated to make his first appearance in a Hammerheads uniform in Richmond. Scoring two goals and adding an assist for S2 this season, the 19-year old Nigerian forward spent the 2014 season with the Chicago Fire Reserves in the Premier Development League.
