Richmond Kickers News Release

RICHMOND, VA - The Richmond Kickers notched their second win of the season, shutting out the New Hampshire Phantoms, 4-0, in front of a crowd of 2,213. Midfielders Trey Alexander and Matthew Watson each recorded a goal in the 37th and 89th minutes respectively while 2006 USL2 MVP Robert Ssejjemba was responsible for a pair of goals in the 21st and 52nd minutes.

New Hampshire opened the attack in the 8th minute of play when last year's leading scorer Almir Barbosa accepted a cross at the top of the box and confronted Kickers keeper Ronnie Pascale one on one. Pascale challenged and pushed the ball just over the end line.

Soon after, the Kickers opened scoring in the 21st minute when midfielder Mike Burke played the ball to a streaking Ssejjemba. On a breakaway, Ssejjemba challenged Phantoms goalkeeper Brian Levey, one on one, and slid a right-footed shot from the penalty spot into the open net.

Richmond doubled the score in the 37th minute when midfielder Matt Watson sent a flick-on header to Alexander. Deep on the left side, Alexander eluded defenders and curled the ball around Levey, finding the target for the second goal of the night.

Ssejjemba began the second half with the third tally of the night in the 52nd minute when Burke chipped the ball to him deep inside the six-yard box. Levey attempted to smother the ball but Ssejjemba slipped it just underneath, into the back of the net.

Looking to decrease the deficit, Phantoms defender Tyler Jackson made two consecutive attempts. First, Jackson took a free kick from 25 yards out, bending it around the defensive wall, forcing Pascale to make a leaping save to tip the ball over the crossbar. Six minutes later, Jackson sent another shot high from inside the box, which was again deflected over the crossbar, preserving the shutout.

Kickers midfielder Matt Watson notched the final goal when Brian Morris played the ball into the box on the right side. Watson ran onto the ball and one-touched it low to the far post to close out the night.
