On the first day of his first training camp as head coach of the Tulsa Oilers, Bruce Ramsay saw pretty much what he expected as the Oilers begin preparation for the 2009-10 Central Hockey League season. He saw 30 players hit the ice and could see the skill in this year's camp, even if things weren't completely clicking.
"It's never like a coach wants, because guys haven't practiced at that intense level for the whole summer. But I've seen some very positive things, and things we have to work on," Ramsay said.
Tuesday night, the Oilers will be holding an intrasquad game at 7 p.m. at the Oilers Ice Center. Former Oiler players Tom Karalis and Doug Pirnak will coach the two squads while Ramsay observes from the stands.
Admission for the intrasquad game is free for season ticket holders, and $10 for everyone else. Ramsay expects it be intense.
"It's going to be huge. There's jobs on the line," Ramsay said. "Whenever your job is on the line you better come out and give the best effort you can. Give yourself an opportunity to stay here and get an opportunity to play for the Tulsa Oilers."
Ramsay will take most of the training camp squad to Odessa for preseason games on Thursday and Saturday against the Jackalopes. Those games start at 7 p.m. and can be heard via the internet at http://player.streamtheworld.com/liveplayer.php?callsign=KFZXFM.
The Oilers start the CHL regular season on Friday October 16th at Mississippi. The home opener for the Oilers in their 18th CHL season will be Saturday October 24th at 7:35 against the Wichita Thunder. Season tickets for the Oilers 2009-10 season in the BOK Center are available by calling the Oilers at (918) 632-PUCK (7825).
