Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

June 28, 2009 - The Cedar Rapids Kernels rallied with an unearned run in the top of the eighth inning but an RBI single by Shawn Griffin off Kernel reliever Nick Pugliese (1-1) gave the Burlington Bees a 3-2 win over the Kernels at Community Field in Burlington. The loss drops the Kernels to 2-2 in the MWL second half and 42-32 overall.

The Kernels had a hard time figuring out Burlington starter Mike Montgomery as he held the Kernels to a run on two hits, walked one and struck out seven over 5.2 innings. Darwin Perez drove in the Kernels first run on a RBI single in the sixth to score Anel De Los Santos and Gabe Jacobo was 1-4 with a double, the Kernels only extra base hit of the day.

The Kernels tied the game in the eighth as with the bases loaded Jacobo grounded to the Burlington shortstop, Antonio Jimenez, who committed an error to let Dwayne Bailey score the tying run. Reliever Barry Bowden (2-2) got Adam Younger to pop out and avoided any further damage.

Kernels starter Tyler Chatwood allowed two runs on five hits over four innings, with three walks and six strikeouts. Matt Shoemaker struck out three over three innings of relief and Pugliese allowed four hits and struck out four over 1.2 innings.

The Kernels have the day off on Monday to participate in the annual Kernels Foundation Charity Golf Outing before heading to Beloit and a four game series with the Snappers starting Tuesday. They return to Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Saturday, July 4th and host the Quad Cities River Bandits at 5:05 pm in the first game of a twelve game home stand.

Tickets may be purchased on-line at www.kernels.com , or by calling the Kernels Ticket Office at 896-7560. Ticket office hours are 10 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday, and 10 am to 2 pm on Saturday.
