Kernels announce 2005 home schedule

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Cedar Rapids Kernels will open the 2005 Midwest League baseball season at home on Thursday, April 7, with a noon game against the Kane County Cougars. The season-opening series continues with games against Kane County on April 8 through April 10.

The Kernels, in their 13th season as an affiliate of the Anaheim Angels, are scheduled to play 70 home games at Veterans Memorial Stadium, including 35 on weekends and holidays.

Game times remain the same. Weekday games in April and May will start at 6:30 p.m., Saturday games at 5 p.m. and Sunday games at 2 p.m., unless otherwise designated. Regular season games on Monday through Saturday in June through September will start at 7 p.m., and Sunday games at 2 p.m., unless otherwise designated.

The Kernels' schedule includes six noon games. Also, the game on Monday, July 4, will start at 5 p.m. so fans may once again stay at the stadium and watch the Freedom Festival Fireworks from downtown.

The Kernels host their Iowa rivals – Burlington, Clinton and Quad Cities – 18 times. Quad Cities, which is now affiliated with the St. Louis Cardinals, and Wisconsin (Mariners) visit only four times. Peoria, newly affiliated with the Chicago Cubs, Beloit (Twins) and Kane County (Athletics) will play eight games apiece in Cedar Rapids, Burlington (Royals) and Clinton (Rangers), seven.

The 2005 Kernels home schedule includes:

33 weekend games (Friday – 13, Saturday – 10, Sunday – 10)

Games on Memorial Day (Mon., May 30) and the Fourth of July (Mon., July 4)

35 other games during the week (Monday – 6, Tuesday – 7, Wednesday – 8, Thursday – 14)

Six noon games (April 7, May 5, May 20, June 2, July 7, August 18)

Eight games against the Peoria Chiefs, affiliate of the Chicago Cubs (April 19-22, June 23-26)

The final home date, Sept. 1, is Fan Appreciation Day
