Keogh on Target for Memorable Season

Rochester Knighthawks forward Stephen Keogh is looking to have a personal best season in 2014 and by the looks of it, he might do just that.

Keogh, a product of Syracuse University, is in his third season in the National Lacrosse League and third with the Knighthawks. Prior to being drafted by the Knighthawks. He and Knighthawks Assistant Captain Cody Jamieson were no strangers before becoming teammates in the NLL. The duo led Syracuse to a National Championship in 2009.

"He is just a tough guy, which makes him tough to play against. He likes to get down and dirty," said Jamieson. "When his confidence is up, he is a pretty hard guy to stop."

Being drafted by the Knighthawks for the 2012 season, Keogh played in all 16 regular season games, both playoff games, and the championship game, the first of the Knighthawks' back-to-back championship wins. In 2013, Keogh played in 12 games and two playoff games.

"I think his biggest attribute is that he plays hard all the time," said Knighthawks forward Joe Walters. "It's not always what he does on the scoreboard, but it's the little things he does that set him apart from the rest."

Up to this point in the season, Keogh has recorded 22 points, just two shy of his season total from 2013. He is well on his way to topping his career high of 58 points. Seven points (4-3) of his 22 were collected in the 17-9 win against Toronto last Saturday night, which was a career best. He was also featured on the NLL's Top 10 Plays of the Week for Week Eight.

"It was nice to see them fall," said Knighthawks Assistant Coach Andy Secore. "He was doing all the right things and knew (scoring) was going to happen."

The win in Toronto not only marked the Knighthawks' first win on the road for 2014, it also marked the highest number of goals the team has been able to score this season. The offense went on an 11-goal run between the second and third quarters. Three of Keogh's four goals of the night were scored during that time.

"Offensively, we were clicking, moving the ball well and staying spread on offense and most of our shots were falling," said Keogh. "We were shooting with more confidence."

Coming off this weekend's win, Keogh and Walters took to the field in a different way, not as players, but as teachers and coaches. The Knighthawks held a lacrosse camp for boys ages 7-14 at Brighton Sports Zone this week. The opportunity for kids to learn from professionals is important to both players as they try to spread their passion for lacrosse and knowledge of the game.

"We are kind of pioneers for the game and just trying to grow the game," said Walters. "Creating these memories and experiences for the kids is just priceless."

The Knighthawks will travel to Calgary this weekend to take on the Roughnecks at 9:00 p.m. Saturday. The team is searching for its second road win of the season. The game can be viewed on The Lacrosse Network on YouTube or by tuning into Sportsradio 950 ESPN or www.sportsradio950espn.com .

"We just have to play our game-plan, move the ball and play smart offensiv e lacrosse and take great shots," said Keogh. " Calgary is a tough place to play but we are looking forward to it."
