Kendall Edwards signs AFL deal

FRESNO – A second member of the Central Valley Coyotes secondary and former Fresno State University defensive back, Kendall Edwards, has signed an undisclosed contract with the Arizona Rattlers of the Arena Football League.

Edwards, who played five games with the Coyotes during his first season in the arenafootball2 league, tallied 13 tackles and two interceptions.

“This is the opportunity I had hoped for,” said the defensive back. “I was glad I had a chance to come back to where I played college ball, but I can’t wait to be make a positive impact in Arizona.”

While at Fresno State University, Edwards was one of the teamÂ’s best cover men. He recorded seven tackles in two games in 2002 before tearing knee ligaments that would sideline him for the rest of the season. In 2001, he was an honorable mention All-WAC player, making 27 tackles in nine games. During his first season with the Bulldogs he played in 10 games recording 13 tackles.

Edwards prepped at Jurupa Valley High (Mira Loma, Calif.), where he lettered in football, basketball and track. He earned All-CIF honors as a senior at defensive back.

Born Nov. 13, 1980, in Riverside, Calif., EdwardsÂ’ brother, Curtis, also lettered in football at Fresno State.

With the signing, Edwards becomes the fifth player in franchise history and second Coyote to sign an AFL contract, joining former defensive specialist Jermaine Smith who signed with the Los Angeles Avengers earlier this offseason.

The Coyotes will hold an open try-out at Sequoia High School in Redwood City, Calif. on Saturday, January 15 at 9:00 a.m. and registration will begin at 8:00 a.m. The cost of the tryout will be $60, paid the day of. For more information contact the Coyote front office at 559-263-9780.
