Saturday, March 1, 2008 and it was scout night at the Chevrolet Centre.
I was even out skating before the game, in my hockey gear, with the boy
scouts. After skating, still in my gear, I interviewed number nine of
the Youngstown SteelHounds, Nate Schwartzbauer. I found out many things about Nate. His hometown is Wasilla, Alaska
where he learned to skate when he was about 3 years old. Nate's school
mascot was the Knights. He got started playing hockey from a pamphlet
his kindergarten teacher passed out. In the past Nate's younger brother
used to play hockey but now Nate's the only one in his family to play.
Nate's favorite color is green. He loves steak and his favorite NHL team
is the Washington Capitals. This year is his rookie year with the
Hounds, before playing here he played at Bemidji State University, in
Minnesota. Nate said, "I love my rookie year, it has been a blast. The
team, coach, and fans are awesome." His most prized accomplishment was
graduating from college. He graduated with a Bachelor's degree in
business. Besides playing hockey, he enjoys fishing, hunting, hiking,
and four wheeling. After the interview I headed up to the press box with Tim Sampsell, the
media relations director and game announcer for the SteelHounds. After
having some Subway, I was ready to watch the Hounds defeat the Wichita
Thunder. The first period was when the most goals were scored. Two minutes and
sixteen seconds into the first period Bryan Lachapelle scored with an
assist from Joel Irving, and Chris Richards. Scoring the second goal
eight minutes and fourteen seconds into the game was Mark Odut, with an
assist from Jeff Genovy. Fourteen minutes and fifty seven seconds into
the first period Joel Irving scored with an assist from Eric main, and
Steve Birnstill. Wichita scored close to the end of the period making
the first period's final score three to one Hounds. The goals weren't
the biggest part of the first period, David Simoes got into a fight with
Kyle Bruce shortly after the first goal, and then got into a fight with
Cedric Bernier after the third goal. The most exciting and longest period was the second. Only two goals
were scored and only one penalty was given. Wichita scored first, but
four minutes later Nate Schwartzbauer scored unassisted and short
handed. Wichita's goalie came out to play the puck when Nate stole it
off of him and scored on the empty net. Nate Schwartbauer said, "When I
was on the breakaway my thoughts were, oh my god I'm gong to score and
that I needed to calm the puck down because it was bouncing." In the third period Mark Odut scored with an assist from Steve Birnstill
and Jeff Genovy one minute and nine seconds into the period. Two minutes
and thirty-four seconds into the third period Kevin Jarman scored with
an assist from Petr Pohl and Eric Przepiorka, making the score six, two
Hounds. Everyone that's a SteelHounds fan knows what six goals mean,
free Big Macs! Wichita made an effort and tried to come back by scoring
nine minutes and eight seconds into the period. Eighteen minutes and
thirty seconds into the third period David Simoes got into his third
fight of the game and second fight with Kyle Bruce, number fourteen.
David received his third Major penalty of the game causing the referee
to give him a game misconduct. The final score of the night was Hounds six, Thunder three. Receiving
the third star of the game was number sixteen Bryan Lachapelle. The
second star went to Nate Schwartzbauer, number nine, who scored the game
winning goal, short handed and unassisted. The first star of the game
was number twenty-five Mark Odut.
