Portland Lumberjax News Release
PORTLAND, Nov. 24, 2006 - This past weekend, the Portland LumberJax attended the first of three training camp sessions in Vancouver, British Columbia. Although 39 hopefuls attended the first camp, Head Coach and General Manager Derek Keenan said that the team will only be bringing back 27 players to the second camp which will again take place in Vancouver from Dec.1 through Dec. 3.
"I think this past weekend was a success," Keenan explained. "I was especially pleased with our draft picks, in particular Ian Crashley, Matt Holman and DJ Driscoll. The tempo was very fast, and I was pleased with our fitness level at this point."
Keenan was impressed with both the offensive and defensive players on the field and added that Dallas Eliuk looked very sharp in goal. Keenan also said that the returning players looked very comfortable with each other now that one season is behind them.
"I get the sense that there is a lot of determination in them, because the end of the season was very disappointing last year," Keenan said. "We had a good year, but its history. The guys seemed focused on improving our team and results for the upcoming season."
The third training camp session will be held Dec. 14 through Dec. 18 in Victoria, British Columbia where the Jax will play Minnesota in an Exhibition Game on Dec. 16 at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Center.
"There will be significant changes in our structure at our second camp" Keenan explained. "Then, since our time between the third camp and our first regular season game on Dec. 30 vs. Buffalo is very limited, we will start to teach and implement our systems with the players to get them ready for the opener."
