Katy extends Maulers' losing streak

April 25, 2006 - National Indoor Football League (NIFL)
Montgomery Bears News Release

Last season, on their way to an 8-6 season that resulted in a division championship, the Montgomery Maulers hit a pair of two-loss skids before turning things around and winning five of their last six games.

They never lost three in a row until now.

The Maulers fell to the Katy Copperheads in Texas 56-20 Saturday night.

Katy jumped out to a 28-point lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back.

With 1:08 left in the first quarter, Maulers quarterback J.R. Richardson was picked off by a Katy defensive back. The interception was returned 30 yards for a touchdown and another nail in the coffin for the traveling Montgomery team.

Backup quarterback Jeff Aaron connected with Shaun Holmes for Montgomery's first score of the night. Next, Charlie Rollins scored on a 3-yard run that drew the Maulers within two scores.

The Copperheads got their offense back on track after the half, scoring three touchdowns before the Maulers could strike back. When they did reach the end zone again, it was Richardson sneaking in from 1 yard out.

For good measure, Katy would tack on another score before the end of the game.

Richardson was 11-of-27 for 79 yards. He also threw five interceptions. Holmes led the team with 3 catches for 35 yards and a touchdown.

On defense, Antoine Hill pulled down an interception while Undrae Crosby and Archie Smith each recorded a sack in the game. Crosby also forced a fumble.

Montgomery (1-4) will travel to Florida to take on Osceola (4-2), who lost a close one to Fayetteville last week.
