Katie Douglas of the Connecticut Sun Named WNBA Player of the Week

NEW YORK, AUGUST 15 - Katie Douglas of the Connecticut Sun was named the WNBA Player of the Week for her role in Connecticut's three victories last week. It is the first WNBA Player of the Week honor for Douglas.

Douglas and the Sun started the week on August 9 by finishing with team highs in scoring (22) and rebounding (8) against the Los Angeles Sparks. Douglas had a career-high 12 free throws in Connecticut's 64-51 victory. On August 11, Douglas scored 14 points, pulled down six rebounds and added four assists in the Sun's 80-65 victory over the Washington Mystics. Three nights later on August 14, she finished with 11 points, six rebounds and five assists in Connecticut's 80-77 win over the Mystics. The Sunday night victory clinched the Eastern Conference championship for the Sun, which has won eight of its last nine games including five straight.

Douglas ranks 13th in the WNBA in steals (1.57), 15th in assists (3.0) and is averaging 11.5 points and 4.1 rebounds this season.

Other candidates for WNBA Player of the Week were Detroit's Katie Smith, Houston's Sheryl Swoopes, Indiana's Tamika Catchings, New York's Becky Hammon, San Antonio's Marie Ferdinand, Seattle's Lauren Jackson and Washington's Alana Beard.

The WNBA tipped off its ninth season on Saturday, May 21, 2005 under the leadership of new President Donna Orender. The 2005 WNBA All-Star Game, which was played in front of a sellout crowd at Mohegan Sun Arena, saw the highest scoring game in WNBA history and culminated with a slam dunk by veteran All-Star Lisa Leslie. The ABC telecast reached more international viewers than ever as it was broadcast in 193 countries by 52 telecasters in 31 languages allowing the league's global fan base to witness all the action.
