ALBANY, N.Y. -- A long night of tennis came down to the final point in the super tiebreaker, and it was the men's doubles team of Leander Paes and Bobby Reynolds who won the decisive point, giving the unbeaten Washington Kastles a 21-20 victory over the New York Sportimes in World TeamTennis action at SEFCU Arena tonight at the University of Albany.
Serena Williams won her singles and women's doubles matches to help the Kastles (12-0) build a lead before the Sportimes (7-6) rallied behind Witten and Parrott, who teamed to upend Reynolds and Paes in the fifth event, 5-2, tying the match at 20 and forcing the super tiebreak.
The Sportimes' mixed doubles team of Travis Parrott and Martina Hingis had edged Serena Williams and Leander Paes, 5-4, to open the match. Williams and Rennae Stubbs then toppled Hingis and Katie O'Brien, 5-2, to give the Kastles the lead at 9-7.
Trailing 4-2, New York's Jesse Witten reeled off three straight games to win the third event, men's singles, 5-4, over Reynolds, heading to the women's singles match between Hingis and Williams, featuring two former World No. 1 players, won by Williams, 5-3.
The teams battle again at SPORTIME on Randall's Island in New York on Wednesday, with Williams and Hingis again competing.
