New York Sportimes News Release

NEW YORK, July 22, 2013 - Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi won his men's doubles and mixed doubles events, leading the Texas Wild to a 22-20 win over the NY Sportimes in a Mylan World TeamTennis matchup at SPORTIME Randall's Island in Manhattan. The night, which featured Tennis Hall of Famers John McEnroe for the Sportimes and Jim Courier for the Wild, also benefited the Johnny Mac Tennis Project (JMTP), which provides scholarships, coaching, transportation and other financial assistance to qualified young tennis players in the greater New York area.

Texas (8-5) got off to a strong start as the men's doubles team of Alex Bogomolov Jr. and Qureshin won, 5-2, over Robert Kendrick and Jesse Witten, with McEnroe substituting in for Witten during the event, permitted in Mylan WTT play. The Wild extended their advantage to 10-4 when Eugenie Bouchard topped Anna-Lena Groenefeld, 5-2.

Then in the matchup of marquee players, McEnroe and Courier played an entertaining men's singles set, splitting the first eight games en route to a tiebreak, which McEnroe won for a 5-4 win to cut the Sportimes' deficit to 14-9 at halftime.

McEnroe stayed on court for a third match, teaming with Kveta Peschke in mixed doubles vs. Darija Jurak and Qureshi. The Sportimes duo battled back from a 4-2 deficit, but the visitors came away with a 5-4 win to boost the Wild's lead to 19-13.

Facing the six-game deficit, the Sportimes' women's doubles team of Groenefeld and Peschke had the nearly impossible task of winning the set, overtime and supertiebreak to pull out the match. They won the set, 5-2, over Jurak and Bouchard then won the first two games of overtime to trail by just a game. But on Bouchard's serve in the third overtime game, Texas closed out the match.

The Sportimes (4-8) dropped their fifth straight, and remain in a three-way tie for second place in the Mylan WTT Eastern Conference along with Boston and Philadelphia, which both also fell in matches on Monday.

On Tuesday the Sportimes close the home season with a matchup with the Washington Kastles, with former Sportimes star Martina Hingis.
