Washington Kastles News Release
Washington Kastles players are continuing their strong play at Wimbledon, as four members of the team remain alive.
Serena Williams, the top seed and defending champion, has looked dominant through the first two rounds, winning Thursday in easy fashion over Anna Chakvetadze (RUS), 6-0, 6-1.
Serena's sister, Venus, easily moved into the third round with a 6-0, 6-4 win Thursday over Ekatarina Makarova (RUS). She will face Alisa Kleybanova in round three as she pursues her sixth Wimbledon.
The Williams sisters are also still alive in their pursuit of a fifth straight Grand Slam doubles title. The pair won their opening match and are scheduled to face Timea Bacsinszky (SUI) and Tathiana Garbin (ITA) in the second round Friday.
Leander Paes can still earn his seventh Grand Slam men's double title, as he and partner Lukas Dlouhy (CZE) earned a straight-set opening round win over Mischa Zverev (GER) and Rik De Voest (RSA). Paes and Dlouhy will face Lucas Lacko (SVK) and Sergiy Stakhovsky (UKR) in a second round match Friday.
Rennae Stubbs partnered with Lisa Raymond (USA) for an opening round doubles win earlier this week. The seventh seeded tandem will go up against the hometown pairing of Jocelyn Rae (GBR) and Heather Watson (GBR) in the second round.
New Kastles member Bobby Reynolds, was partnered Thursday with Marco Chiudinelli (SUI) in a very tough opening-round doubles match against second-seeded Bob and Mike Bryan, who play for the WTT's Kansas City Explorers. The Bryan brothers won 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 as they moved on in their effort to secure their second Wimbledon doubles title.
While Reynolds lost, he can boast that he played on Wimbledon's now-famous Court 18, sight of the historic win earlier in the day by John Isner (USA) over Nicolas Mahut (FRA). Isner, who will play for the WTT's Boston Lobsters this season, won the deciding fifth set 70-68, recording the longest match in tennis history at over 11 hours.
Mixed doubles action gets underway this weekend, with Paes and Stubbs each in action, Paes will play alongside Cara Black (ZIM), with whom he won the Australian Open mixed doubles title in January. The pair are the second seed and earned a first-round by. Stubbs, who has two Grand Slam mixed doubles titles, is teamed with Marcelo Melo (BRA) and the pair are seeded tenth in the tournament. Both Stubbs and Paes are awaiting the completion of other matches to determine their second round opponents.
