Kastles Clinch Best Record in League with Road Win Washington Extends Dominance Over Sportimes with 23-15 Victory

The 11-2 Washington Kastles are streaking into the Mylan WTT Playoffs, having defeated the 4-9 New York Sportimes 23-15 on Tuesday for their ninth consecutive victory overall.

Washington has now won 25 straight matches against Eastern Conference opponents and 11 against the Sportimes specifically, dating back to July 15, 2010.

It was no contest in New York City from the start.

Kastles substitute Frederik Nielsen saved four break points in the final game to clinch the opening set of men's doubles for Washington 5-3.

Coach Murphy Jensen elected to send out Anastasia Rodionova for women's singles in the second set, and rest Martina Hingis with the playoffs about to begin on Thursday. Rodionova rewarded her coach by making 82 percent of her first serves en route to a 5-1 victory over Anna-Lena Groenefeld.

In the third set, Bobby Reynolds benefited from six doubles faults by his opponent Jesse Witten to earn a 5-3 win and give Washington a 15-7 lead going into halftime.

Hingis and Nielsen rallied from 3-1 down against Robert Kendrick and Kveta Peschke to sweep the final four games of mixed doubles and put Washington ahead 20-10.

Though Wimbledon semifinalists Groenefeld and Peschke won women's doubles 5-2, Hingis served out the first game of overtime. Washington is now 10-0 when the Hall-of-Famer Hingis is in the lineup.

Tonight, the Kastles will learn the identity of their opponent in tomorrow's 7 pm Eastern Conference Championship match at Kastles Stadium at The Wharf.

In regular season finales, the Kastles host the 5-8 Boston Lobsters while the Sportimes play an away match against the last-place Philadelphia Freedoms.

If the Lobsters defeat the Kastles or the Freedoms defeat the Sportimes, then Boston will be in DC on back-to-back nights to challenge Washington in the Eastern Conference Championship match.

But if the Kastles beat the Lobsters and the Sportimes beat the Freedoms, then New York will get another crack at Washington with a spot in the Mylan WTT Finals on the line.

Should the Kastles capture their third consecutive Eastern Conference title tomorrow, they will host the Western Conference champion -- either the Springfield Lasers or Texas Wild -- in the Mylan WTT Finals on Sunday at 5 pm.

With the best record in the entire league, the Kastles would have the power to choose the order of play in Sunday's championship match should they win tomorrow night.

Tickets to Washington's final home match of the regular season tonight, and both playoff matches, are on sale now for as little as $15 at Ticketmaster.com.

Washington Kastles vs. Boston Lobsters Preview

Leander Paes Returns to Lineup Tonight, Just in Time for Playoffs

Washington Kastles (13-2) vs. Boston Lobsters (5-8) Wednesday, July 24 at 7 pm Tickets: Ticketmaster.com

All-Time: Kastles lead Lobsters 9-4 Last Meeting: Kastles def. Lobsters 19-18 on July 21, 2013 (Boston, MA) Live Scoring: WashingtonKastles.com Social Media: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram (#RefuseToLose)

Welcome back, Leander Paes! After missing five straight matches with a hamstring injury, Paes returns to the Kastles lineup tonight, just in time for the Mylan WTT Playoffs.

Washington persevered without him, going 2-0 with Rajeev Ram and 3-0 with Frederik Nielsen as replacements. But there's no substitute for Paes' unparalleled showmanship and showy volleys, which Kastles fans have come to know and love the last five seasons.

The Kastles have defeated the Lobsters eight straight times, though Boston came oh-so-close to knocking off Washington on Sunday after winning six straight games from 18-12 down.

In the winner-take-all Supertiebreaker, however, Nielsen and Martina Hingis defeated Eric Butorac and Katalin Marosi 7-3.

The Lobsters will have even more motivation than usual to put an end to Washington's hex over them.

A win by Boston tonight will give them a rematch with the Kastles in DC tomorrow night for the Eastern Conference Championship.

But a Boston loss means that the Lobsters will need the Philadelphia Freedoms to defeat the New York Sportimes in order to qualify for the final playoff spot.

Very few seats remain to tonight's regular season finale at Ticketmaster.com. If you cannot attend the match, follow all of the action via live scoring at WashingtonKastles.com. And be sure to join the conversation throughout the evening on Facebook and Twitter.
