Karlander Returns to Odessa for 2009-2010

(Odessa, TX) - After putting up 33 goals and 43 assists in his first season playing in the Central Hockey League, Kory Karlander is returning to the Odessa Jackalopes for the 2009-2010 campaign. Goaltender Joel Martin will also join the team for his second stint in the Permian Basin.
Karlander joined the Jackalopes last season as co-captain of the team and put up 76 points after playing all 64 games in 2008-09. The veteran center also had seven assists in 13 playoff games.
"I'm excited to be coming back," said Karlander. "For the fans and the organization last season was a success to go further in the playoffs than ever before, but for the players it felt like we have some unfinished business. We wanted to go to the finals, we wanted to win a championship and that's the common goal for everyone this season."
The 2009-10 season will be the 15th of Karlander's pro career. The Melita, Manitoba native recorded his 700th career point on March 14, 2009 with an assist against the Wichita Thunder. The Jacks went on to win the game 7-3. Karlander also scored a penalty shot goal in the win.
"We're lucky to have our core players coming back and it's exciting to try and build on last season's success," added Karlander.
Joel Martin also returns to the Odessa Jackalopes for the second time in his career -- Martin appeared in 10 games for Odessa back in 2003-04. Last year, the product of Fort Worth, Texas, played in 30 games for the Kalamazoo Wings of the IHL with a 3.07 GAA and a .910 SV%.
"(Joel) is a young, solid, quality goaltender," said Jackalopes head coach Paul Gillis. "He's actually won a championship against a team I coached in the past so he brings a winning experience to our team as well, and that's what we want."
Martin won a UHL championship in 2006 with the Kalamazoo Wings as teammates with Karlander. In the playoffs this past year, Martin put together a 2.71 GAA and a .936 SV% for Kalamazoo.
The Odessa Jackalopes are the Central Hockey League affiliate for the NHL's New York Islanders and the AHL's Bridgeport Sound Tigers. The team will begin its 13th season in October.
