Chico Outlaws News Release

(San Ramon, CA. February 3, 2009) The Golden Baseball League (GBL) announced today that Chico Outlaws OF Steve Boggs has had his contract purchased by the Kansas City Royals. The centerfielder had the best season of his pro career in 2008 and this will be his third big league organization.

Boggs, 25, is a right-handed hitting outfielder who was signed by the Colorado Rockies out of San Diego State University in 2004. He spent three seasons with the Rockies, advancing to the A-level Northwest League before being released. In 2007, he joined the Chico Outlaws and was key in their championship season as he improved greatly at the plate and was one of the best defensive outfielders in the league. The Chicago White Sox took notice and purchased his contract after the season. One of the last releases out of Chicago's spring training camp, he rejoined Chico and had another stellar season. He hit .296, scored a team high 73 runs in 86 games and used his speed to steal 27 bases. Defensively, he was once again one of the finest outfielders in the league. This was more than enough to convince Kansas City to purchase his contract and give him the chance to rise through their minor league system in 2009.

Boggs is the 5th player from the 2008 Chico Outlaws team to be acquired by an MLB team, following teammates Chris Malone (Rockies), Jesse Oster (Phillies), Derek Loop (Red Sox), and Lino Garcia (Rockies). After a record of 25 GBL players being purchased by major league organizations in 2008, Boggs is the third in the new year.
