Honolulu Sharks News Release

Kanekoa Texeira, a 2004 graduate of the Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama, has been added to the Honolulu Sharks roster, Hawaii Winter Baseball officials announced today.

The Sharks pitching staff was in need of an arm due to a series of injuries, and when those organizations affiliated with the injured players could not spare a replacement, Texeira was chosen as an addition. Texeira is a prospect with the Chicago White Sox organization, and after being cleared by club brass, will remain with the Sharks for the remainder of the HWB campaign.

"It means a lot, I never thought I'd be able to play back home in Hawaii again," Texeira said. "It's a big thrill, and I hope I don't disappoint anybody."

Texeira, a native of Kula, Maui, spent the regular season with the White Sox Class-A affiliate, the Kannapolis (N.C.) Intimidators. In 39 games, the 21-year-old compiled 52 2/3 innings and struck out 58 while racking up a 3.69 ERA and 16 saves to accompany a 5-2 record.

The former Kamehameha Warrior and Saddleback Community College product has been working out on his own, while keeping hope alive that he could spend time in HWB. While here, Texeira hopes to stay in shape and remaining injury free while working on his change up to compliment a low-90 mph fastball.

Texeira is also looking forward to playing against-and pitching to-fellow Chicago farmhand Matt Inouye, who joined the Waikiki BeachBoys as another roster replacement. The pair has matured together through the game of baseball, playing against each other in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu (Inouye played for rival Mid-Pacific), and then joined forces in the White Sox organization.

"It will be fun to play against each other, and trying to earn bragging rights (to bring back to White Sox) Spring Training," Texeira said.
