San Diego Riptide News Release
SAN DIEGO â Former San Diego Riptide starting quarterback, Kane Claunch, signed a deal with the New York Dragons of the AFL earlier this week. He is the first player from the 2004 Riptide roster to make the jump during the off-season.
"After reviewing tons of game video, we feel that Claunch is ready for the transition to AFL and to the Dragons," said Dragons Director of Player Personnel Rory Vacco. "The af2 has been very good to us in the past when we have promoted players to the AFL.".
Claunch was the primary signal caller for the San Diego Riptide since its inaugural season. His season high 63 passing touchdowns and 105.03 passer rating led the Riptide to their first playoff appearance in 2002. In 2003, he continued his aerial onslaught and led the team with 63 total touchdowns and held a consistent 100.42 passer rating.
Last season, he surpassed the 10,000 career passing yards mark and spent considerable time on the af2 passing yards, total yards, and passing touchdowns top ten rankings. Claunch threw for at least five touchdowns in nine out of 12 games, including an eight touchdown performance against the Hawaiian Islanders in a game that featured the af2's highest combined point total, 168. He ended the 2004 season with a 110.7 passer rating, 62 touchdowns, and 3,155 passing yards.
Prior to becoming the premier quarterback for the San Diego Riptide, Claunch was the three-year starter for Montana Tech Orediggers where he completed 57% of his passes for 6,208 yards, 45 touchdowns, and a 130.15 passer rating. He has also spent time with the AFL's Colorodo Crush for three games before being released.
He moved from Los Angeles to Montana his freshman year of High School. On August 17, 2002, he married his college sweetheart Naomi Kaio. He earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering and minored in Business Administration from Montana Tech.
