Real Salt Lake News Release
SALT LAKE CITY (Monday, Oct. 24, 2005) - Major League Soccer today announced that Real Salt Lake MF Brian Kamler has been selected as the winner of the 2005 MLS U.S. Soccer Foundation Humanitarian of the Year award.
"When my wife, Suzanne, and I decided to do this we didn't do it for any recognition, but to be a part of the community of Utah," said Kamler with astonishment. "I have stated this before, but the award really goes to the fans of Real Salt Lake who have raised considerable funds and donated several items for people around Utah and the hurricane victims in the Gulf."
Along with 10 years of MLS experience, Kamler brought his leadership on and off the field to the Utah community. Volunteering his time, the midfielder served as the RSL spokesperson for "Covering Kids & Families" program, which included helping educate lower income families about health care programs. In addition, Kamler visited several schools encouraging students to strive for their goals and kicked of Primary Children's Hospital literacy program reading to young patients affected by cancer as well as making personalized visits to each child's room. Kamler has also joined Utah's First Lady Mary Kaye Huntsman to reach out to troubled youth through the "Power in You" program.
"Brian is very worthy of this honor and we are proud that he is being recognized," said RSL General Manager Steve Pastorino. "I am thrilled that his efforts will continue even as he transitions to his new career off the field."
The 33 year-old and his wife, Suzanne, created "Kam's Kauses", a program set up at every home game to help raise funds for local charities, including: United Way of Salt Lake, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Utah Down Syndrome Foundation, The Road Home, National Disaster Relief (Hurricane Katrina), Utah Youth Soccer Association Scholarship Program, Special Olympics, Utah Food Bank, Humane Society, Boy and Girl Scouts, Huntsman Cancer Institute, and Primary Children's Hospital.
"Brian influence is felt not only on the field, but off the field and that is what makes him the classy individual he is," said RSL Head Coach John Ellinger. "He's contributed to the team from day one, playing several different positions from the midfield to goalkeeper. I'm excited to see where he is heading within the organization and look forward to working with him."
