Kalamazoo Heroically Forces OT, Loses in Shootout

Kalamazoo, MI- Brett Beauvais forced overtime with his late third period goal, but the Traverse City North Stars escaped Kalamazoo and the Jr. K-Wings with a 4-3 shootout victory on Saturday afternoon at the Borgess Health Rink at Wings West.

The North Stars got the scoring underway in the first, off the 15th tally of the season fromWill Badner. The power play tally at the 8:23 mark of the first period made it 1-0 in favor of Traverse City.

Their one goal lead would only last for two and a half minutes, as Dan Cesarz drew the game even with his fifth goal of the season.

His shot on a three-on-one snuck through Traverse City goaltender, Kyle Laslo. Laslo was making his tenth start against Kalamazoo on the season.

Traverse City took another one goal lead, midway through the middle period. Sean Murphy scored his team leading 19th goal of the season by sidestepping the Kalamazoo defense and beating Alex Okicki with a wrist shot.

Trailing by one and just coming off their first power play of the day, Kalamazoo tied the game on Jacob McDowell's 13th of the season. McDowell handled a loose puck in front of the goal and slid a backhander past Laslo for the tying strike.

Eleven and a half minutes into the final period, Traverse City took their third one-goal lead of the afternoon. Jared Van Wormer gave his team the lead with his 16th of the season.

With less than two minutes to play, Kalamazoo tied it up on the third goal of the season from Beauvais. The goal forced a five-minute overtime, in which no winner was crowned.

In the ensuing shootout, Kalamazoo scored in round one, but were blanked after that.

The back to back goals from Traverse City in rounds four and five were enough to secure their victory.

The Jr. K-Wings will return to the Borgess Health Rink at Wings West again on Sunday, March 4th against the Traverse City North Stars.
