Junior StreetKings Fall League Is Underway
August 20, 2007 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN, MS --- The weather has been hot, but not as hot as the action under the canopy at the Junior StreetKings' Roller Hockey Rink in Hernando. So far this summer, the Junior StreetKings have conducted their spring league and hosted several camps for the varying levels of youth hockey players in the area. Last week, the fall league got underway with over 50 participants and will run through mid-September.
"The heat has been tough," RiverKings Captain and Junior StreetKings Director Derek Landmesser said. "We had to cancel a night last week because of the heat, but overall the kids have been warriors and have continued to play. We've made sure that everyone gets plenty of water to stay hydrated."
The 2007 Junior StreetKings Fall League consists of five teams, three squirt teams (ages 11 and under) and two bantam teams (ages 12-16).
The teams will play round robin schedules leading up the championships on September 15.
Games are played on varying nights during the week with game times of 6pm and 6:50 pm on those nights. Fans can go to www.jrstreetkings.com for a complete schedule, player statistics, standings and more information.
The public is welcome to attend any of the games and are especially encouraged to be there for the championships on September 15. Games that day begin at 9 a.m.
The Junior StreetKings Arena is located at the Hernando Civic Center off of Robertson Gin Road in Hernando.
The Junior StreetKings program was started with a grant from Maddox Foundation that built the covered roller hockey rink with a number of entities also contributing the land. Although already regarded as state-of-the-art, the rink was upgraded this summer to take its status to an even higher level.
"Thanks to Maddox Foundation, we have a brand new concession stand and bathroom facility, bleachers, as well as a couple of drop off areas that allow parents to drop their kids off right beside the rink," Landmesser stated. "Those new additions make it an even greater facility that not only benefits the roller hockey participants, but also the others that use the park."
Landmesser says the new concession stand has everything ranging from a snack to an entire meal.
