Toronto Lynx News Release

Wednesday, September 7, 2005 (TORONTO, ON) - A mixed squad of U15 and U16 Lynx Juniors wrapped up the 2005 summer season on the Labour day weekend, with a two game exhibition series against the Ottawa Fury. Following a closely contested 2-2 tie the previous weekend in Toronto, the Junior Lynx visited Ottawa to take on both their U15 and U16 squads on the long weekend. The previous match-up was a 4-1 victory for the Fury, back on Labour Day 2005, at the Oz Stadium.

The Toronto Lynx Premier Soccer Academy has made positive advances in the past year and therefore so this as the ideal opportunity to monitor developments against the Fury which is a well organized club providing tough competition. Both the Fury and Junior Lynx U15's came very close to qualifying for the Super Y League's North American Playoffs in their respective Divisions as both clubs are already looking to attract new players as they continue preparations for fall programming in preparation for the 2006 season.

In Saturday's game against the U15's, the Fury took an early lead following a complete mix up from a Lynx throw in, the ball going directly to a Fury player who quickly released the striker for an early breakaway goal. Amazingly, that score stood as the final result. Following the goal, the Junior Lynx settled down to play some excellent soccer, doing everything except finding the back of the net. Led by Captain Danny Schulthies (Oshawa), the Lynx put together a top class performance and dominated the play, especially in the second half.

The same Lynx mix squad, returned Sunday morning to face the U16 Fury. Both teams started strongly with chances at both ends in the early exchanges. Again the Lynx went down to a well taken goal by the Fury at 15 minutes. Once again they came back to play another high quality performance. Mackenzie Wilde (Oakville) tied the game on the stroke of half time, after seeing the Fury goalkeeper make the save of the weekend from his close range effort moments earlier. Devon Munch (Pickering) made it 2-1 Lynx from the Penalty spot and both Chad Goscal (Toronto) and Anthony Doran (Oakville)came ever so close to making it more. In true Fury spirit they came back with a tying goal in the last few minutes, as they had done so in Toronto the previous weekend.

"I think the three games with the Ottawa Fury shows just how much we have improved at the younger end of our program" commented Academy Director Duncan Wilde. "Both our U15 and U16 teams played with high quality all season long and that provide great continuity for our older Academy teams and players, that are in search of that pro or scholarship opportunity. During our first two seasons, our program has assisted with placement of no less than 15 players that are currently attending US schools on soccer specific scholarships," added Wilde. "The Junior Lynx now draw great attention when we visit the USA, which is a great credit to our older teams.

The U19 Junior Lynx were coached again this season by Danny Stewart and won the Great Lakes Super Y League Division Championship for the second year running with another undefeated league record. The older team eventually lost in the semi final stages to HC United (Florida) which went on to defeat the New York Metro Stars in the North American finals held in New Jersey back in August.

The Junior Lynx have confirmed 2006 entries to the United Soccer League for U15, U16, U17, U19 boys and U16 girls, which will once again compete in the Great Lakes Division of the Super Y League.
