May 18, 2007 - United States Hockey League (USHL) - Ohio Junior Blue Jackets News Release

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio Junior Blue Jackets selected 11 players in the 2007 United States Hockey League Draft, including four players in the first phase and seven in the second phase, General Manager Don Harkins announced earlier this week.

In the first round, Ohio used the second overall pick to select forward Alden Hirschfeld from Sylvania, Ohio. Hirschfeld has committed to play college hockey at Miami (OH) and played last season for Mahonning Valley of the North American Hockey League.

"With our core of returning players and the addition of our Futures Draft picks from last year, we feel Alden is a specific piece to the puzzle for our club," said Harkins.

The Junior Blue Jackets chose center Matt Leitner with their second pick, 14th overall. Leitner played last season with Anaheim Jr. Ducks Midget team.

"Matt has exceptional vision and skill," said Harkins. "He won't back down, competes and plays with an edge."

The team did not have a third round selection, but had two picks in the fourth round. With its first choice in the fourth round, 42nd overall, Ohio selected defenseman Zach Trotman from the Detroit Victory Honda Under-16 team. Six spots later, with the 48th overall pick, the team chose forward Dalton Speelman from the San Jose Sharks Midget team to complete phase one of the draft.

In the second phase of the draft, the Junior Blue Jackets took seven players, beginning with Jordy Murray (11th round, 86th overall), who is the son of St. Louis Blues Head Coach Andy Murray. The team also chose forward Brian Flynn (12th round, 98th overall), defenseman Jon Merrill (13th round, 110th overall) and goaltender Randy Wolcott (14th round, 122nd overall).

Ohio's final three selections were forward Cody Murphy (15th round, 134th overall), forward Niko Kapetanovic (16th round, 146th overall) and goalie Scott Pederson (17th round, 158th overall).
