Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings News Release

Game Recap-

Friday, October 19th Vs. Jamestown Ironmen. 1-0 OT Loss.

Jamestown, NY- Former Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wing forward, Dan Cesarz, notched two points, including the game winning goal, as he lead the Jamestown Ironmen to a 2-1 victory over the Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings at the Jamestown Savings Bank Arena.

In a back and forth first period, each team was fortunate enough to get one power play opportunity over the course of the first twenty minutes. Neither were able to capitalize, as both goalies were flawless. Alex Okicki made seven saves for Kalamazoo, while Reed Mimmack made five saves of his own.

The goaltenders stole the show again in the second frame, as both were able to blank their opponent. Mimmack made 12 saves, and helped his club kill off two Kalamazoo penalties. In the other goal, Okicki made nine more saves in the second, and his team killed off one Ironmen power play.

Midway through the third period, it would be the Jr. K-Wings who were able to spring out to a one-goal lead. Danny Hamburg found a soft spot by the goal, and finished off a rebound from a shot that came off the stick of Josh Dangel skating in his first game since September 30th.

Minutes later it would be the Ironmen who brought the score back to even at the 15:46 mark of the third. Former Kalamazoo forward, Dan Cesarz, slid a backhand pass to the front of the goal that connected with Evan Ritt (4th), who was there to pound it past Okicki and knot the game.

With a scoreless final four minutes, the game headed to overtime tied at a goal apiece. It was the first time of the season that Kalamazoo would play extra session hockey.

It didn't take long to end the game in overtime, as Cesarz (5th) walked toward the middle of the Kalamazoo zone and let a shot go from the right side that passed Okicki in the back of the net for the game winning goal, just 20 seconds into the period.

Saturday, October 20th Vs. Jamestown Ironmen. 7-3 Loss.

Jamestown, NY- The Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings got goals from their two leading scorers, Luc Boby and Robbie Payne, but they weren't enough to lead Kalamazoo to victory, as they dropped Saturday's contest at the hands of the Jamestown Ironmen by a score of 7-3.

After going over seventy-five minutes without a goal, dating back to October 14th, the Jr. K-Wings struck first in Saturday's contest. Six minutes into the opening period. Patrick Spellacy had the puck between the tops of the circles, and had plenty of time to rip a shot that passed Jamestown goalie, Reed Mimmack.

Quickly responding for the Ironmen was Elliot Tisdale. He was able to slap home a rebound opportunity off a shot from the left-side point by Mitch Hall. The second goal of the season by Tisdale was able to lock the game at one goal apiece.

During the early stages of the second period, Jamestown sprung out to their first lead of the game. Scoring on a slap shot off a face-off in the attacking zone was Dan Cesarz (6th), who picked up his third point in two games against his former team.

Just a few minutes later, Kalamazoo was able to tie the game with a power play tally by Payne. Payne camped out on the backside of the goal and got a back door pass from Josh Dangel to bury his ninth goal of the season.

Just thirty-six seconds later, it would be the Ironmen regaining a one goal lead. This time it was Ross Pavek who was able to beat Alex Okicki for his fourth of the season.

Adding to a thrilling second period was Boby. Off a face-off along the left wing side in the Jamestown zone, Boby scampered on a loose puck and shot it past Mimmack for his team leading 10th goal of the campaign.

Scoring the third goal of the period for the Jamestown Ironmen was Payden Mielke. His first of the season came from a wrist shot that was taken from the right-side point. The goal gave Jamestown a 4-3 advantage, and was the seventh lead change of the game.

Only fifteen seconds had elapsed in the third period before the Ironmen were able to extend their lead to two. Notching a power play tally was Dylan Zink (5th), making the score 5-3.

Only 29 seconds after the Zink goal, Jamestown was able to take a three-goal lead. Netting his second of the season for the Ironmen was Kyle Urso.

Putting the finishing touches on a remarkable run of scoring in the first 2:19 of the third period was Tyler Dunagen, who tallied his fifth of the season, giving his team a 7-4 lead. The goal would be the last for Okicki, who was pulled for Nick Stuart after giving up seven goals on 37 shots.

In the decisive four-goal victory, the Ironmen outshot the Jr. K-Wings by a total of 48-23.

Looking Ahead

The Jr. K-Wings return home this weekend to play two straight contests against the NAHL's newest expansion team, the Johnstown Tomahawks. Saturday's contest will be held on the Halloween themed Orange Ice at Wings Stadium at 3:30 PM. The two teams will return to the Borgess Health Rink at Wings West the following afternoon for a 2:00 PM puck drop. After winning three games in a row, including two straight against the Michigan Warriors, highlighted by 6-1 and 6-2 victories, Kalamazoo has dropped three of their last four games. The Tomahawks tied with the Janesville Jets for fifth in the North Division, however their league leading four overtime losses could have seen them much higher up in the North.
