Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings News Release

Game Recap- Thursday, February 2nd @ Jamestown Ironmen. 3-2 Loss.

Jamestown, NY- Alex Brooks scored his first goal as a Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wing, but it wouldn't be enough to topple a three-goal first period from the Jamestown Ironmen, as the Jr. K-Wings dropped their contest by a final score of 3-2.

The Ironmen got the scoring underway early in the first, as they found the back of the net just one minute and twenty nine seconds after the opening draw.

A minute and a half later, Jacob McDowell poured in the equalizer, his tenth of the season at the 2:54 mark. McDowell is the fifth Jr.

K-Wing with 10+ goals on the season (Payne, Graves, Gattelaro, Flood).

The tie score lasted until midway in the first, when Jamestown re-gained a one-goal lead off Steve Frangione's first of the season.

With only 51 seconds remaining in the first, and working with a power play, the Ironmen lit the lamp again on Bryan Watt's seventh of the season.

After surrendering three goals on fourteen shots, Ken MacLean was pulled in favor of Alex Okicki.

After having more control of the game during the second period, Kalamazoo struck halfway through the frame. Brooks scored his fourth of the season at the 9:52 mark. It was the first goal for Brooks in a Kalamazoo uniform.

A scoreless third period saw Jamestown escape with a one-goal victory. MacLean (12-6-1) took the loss in the game. The two teams faceoff two more times over the next two nights. Both contests are at 7 p.m.

Friday, February 3rd @ Jamestown Ironmen. 5-3 Win.

Jamestown, NY- The Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings scored five times with five different goal scorers in their 5-3 win over the Jamestown Ironmen. In the second of three straight games in Jamestown, the Jr. K-Wings killed off all seven of Jamestown power plays to help seal the victory.

The first period started in similar fashion to the night before. The Ironmen got on the board early in the opening frame on Luc Gerdes' third goal of the season just 3:19 into the game. Zack Szajner assisted on the only goal of the first period.

Jamestown had another quick start to a period as they took a two-goal lead thanks to Jake Pollock (6th) four minutes into the 2nd period. Pollack jammed home a lose puck in front of goaltender Alex Okicki, with an assist from Alex Zagari.

Kalamazoo would respond with a goal of their own by Brock Raffaele (6th), only three minutes later. Brandon Flood tried the wrap-around and picked up the primary assist on the Raffaele goal, with Kyle Gattelaro also registering an assist.

Less than a minute later the Junior K-Wings tied things up at two with goal by Taylor Burden (6th). Christian George recorded the only assist on the Kalamazoo tally.

The scoring was not over for either team as Zack Szajner (5th) broke the tie with a goal late into the second period giving Jamestown the 3-2 lead over Kalamazoo. Cody Sarmiento got the primary assist on the lead changing goal.

However, the Jamestown lead did not last long; in fact, only 18 seconds. Robbie Payne (23rd) placed a shot past Jamestown goaltender Joe Gladnick with an assist from Andrew Graves to tie the game at three.

The third period continued the theme of scoring early when Chris Leone (2nd) gave Kalamazoo their first lead of the game at the 2:56 mark. Flood picked up his second assist of the game on the Jr. K-Wings power play goal.

Kalamazoo continued with their scoring touch when Anthony Appleyard (7th) put a shot over the glove of Gladnick to give the Jr. K-Wings a 5-3 lead.

The two-goal lead proved to be plenty for Okicki and crew as Kalamazoo skated to a 5-3 victory over the Jamestown Ironmen when the final horn sounded.

Saturday, February 4th @ Jamestown Ironmen. 7-3 Win.

Jamestown, NY- Anthony Appleyard had three points, while Drew Graves, Brock Raffaele and Robbie Payne added two of their own, as the Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings beat the Jamestown Ironmen by a score of 7-3 on Saturday night. The victory capped two straight wins to end Kalamazoo's three-game series at the Jamestown Savings Bank Arena.

For the first time in the three game series, Kalamazoo took a 1-0 lead. At the 6:46 mark of the opening period, Brock Raffaele scored his seventh of the season on a deflection from a Matt Lanzilloti slap shot.

With time ticking down in the first period, Alex Brooks gave Kalamazoo a 2-0 lead to take into the locker room. With 23 seconds remaining in the frame, Brooks threw a shot on net from the blue line that was never seen by Jamestown goalie, Joe Gladnick. The goal for Brooks was his fifth of the season, and second as a Jr. K-Wing.

Starting the second the same way the first ended, Raffaele scored his eighth of the season just 36 seconds into the middle stanza. Raffaele has notched seventeen points (eight goals, nine assists) in just nine games with the Jr. K-Wings.

Six minutes later, Jamestown would find the scoreboard for the first time of the night. On the power play, Jeff McFarland buried a rebound for his 18th of the season.

Kalamazoo responded quickly, however, as Christian George scored his sixth of the season on an unassisted tally at the 8:42 mark of the second.

Two minutes later, and working with a five-on-three power play, Robbie Payne scored his 24th of the season when his wrister from the left circle found the back of the net, the goal increased the Kalamazoo lead to 5-1.

With just over five minutes to play in the second period, Jamestown converted on yet another power play, giving them their second man advantage goal of the night. They drew to within three on Blake Kelley's second of the season.

The Jr. K-Wings started the third in the same fashion that they began the second by scoring in the opening minute. Anthony Appleyard scored his eighth of the season on a long shot from the right wing side to make the score 6-2. Appleyard's eight goals lead Kalamazoo defensemen.

Kelley added his second of the night and third of the season on a deflection to make it 6-3.

Kelley, who joined Jamestown before Thursday's contest against Kalamazoo, scored three goals over the weekend.

Late in the third, and already working with a three-goal lead, Kalamazoo improved the margin yet again. Danny Hamburg scored his sixth of the season off a nifty toe drag move along the blue line and ripping a wrist shot past Gladnick.

MacLean won the contest by making 31 saves on 34 shots, and in the process improving his record to 13-6-1.
