Alexandria Aces News Release

Alexandria, LA; June 4, 2006 - Righthander Fontella Jones threw a three-hit shutout Sunday, the first of his seven-year career, to lead the Alexandria Aces over the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings 6-0 at Bringhurst Field.

Jones, making only his 13th career start, struck out seven WhiteWings and did not allow a hit after the fourth inning. Only one Rio Grande player reached third base. Jones (2-0) lowered his league-leading ERA to 1.04 with only the second shutout thrown in the United League this season.

The Aces backed up Jones with early run support. Rightfielder Erick Mejias ripped an opposite-field double with two outs in the second inning to drive in Adam Bonner and Cleatus Davidson, who had both singled. In the third inning, Keto Anderson walked and stole second base before scoring on a Josh Tranum single. Anderson went 0-for-4 to end his 16-game hitting streak.

In the fourth, Davidson led off with a solo home run to right field against losing pitcher Jordy Templet (1-2). After Luis Guance reached on an error, catcher Kevin Griffin drove him in with a groundout. Griffin added an RBI triple in the sixth inning, scoring Davidson, who finished 2-for-2 with three runs scored and two walks.

Despite their second straight win, the Aces did receive some bad news Sunday, releasing catcher Luis Espinosa after he was diagnosed with a fractured knuckle on his throwing hand. Alexandria re-signed rookie catcher Cameron McGuire to replace Espinosa.

Alexandria travels to Edinburg for a three-game series with the league-leading Coyotes and complete the road trip at Laredo next weekend. The Aces return home to Bringhurst Field June 13. For more information, call 473-ACES or log on to www.myacesbaseball.com.
