JOLIET, IL - Brian Mazone, 26, of the Joliet JackHammers is the Daktronics Northern League Central Pitcher of the Week for the week ending on August 18. He earned the honor for the second time this season (last time: May 27-June 2). A JackHammers pitcher has earned the pitching honor four times this season. The first place JackHammers had a day off on Monday, but begin a three-game home stand versus the Sioux Falls Canaries on Tuesday. Mazone will start Thursday's game.
Mazone earned the honor because of the two successful starts this past week. Mazone was 2-and-0 with a 0.66 ERA.13.2IP 8H 1R 1ER 2BB 12K. His wins were at Fargo-Moorhead on August 13 and versus St. Paul on August 17.
Overall this season, Mazone is 13-and-3 with a 2.72 ERA.115.2IP 107H 38R 35ER 9HR 7HB 22BB 109K. Opponents are batting .243 against him. He has pitched in 19 games (18 starts). Entering Monday's Northern League Central games, Mazone leads the league in wins, 2nd in strikeouts, 2nd in innings pitched and 5th in ERA. He is on a seven-start winning streak.
Mazone was the starting and winning pitcher in the Northern League All-Star Game on August 6. He owns sole possession of 2nd place for most wins in a NLC season and is one win away from tying the record. Mazone has at least three regular season starts remaining. Mazone's next start is Thursday at home.
The JackHammers signed Mazone as a free agent on April 12, 2002. This season is his 5th in pro baseball after played at the University of San Diego. Mazone, a left-hander, stands 6'4" and 205 pounds. He resides in Encinitas, CA.
In addition to Mazone earning this award for the second time this season, starting RHP Rich Hyde (week ending July 7) and relief RHP Matt Hammons (week ending June 9) have earned the award.
