COLUMBUS, GA (JUNE 4, 2010) - This Saturday June 5th, as the Columbus Lions (5-2) of the Southern Indoor Football League get set to go PINK for "Cancer Awareness Night," they would like to invite you out to meet Super Bowl XX MVP Richard Dent.
By coming out to the Lions game this Saturday, fans get a double treat when watching two first place caliber teams duke it out for supremacy over the state of Georgia. In doing so, they will get to meet one of the state of Georgia's greatest athletes in former Super Bowl XX MVP Richard Dent. Born in Atlanta, Richard stared for four years at Tennessee State University where he became the 203rd overall pick by the Chicago Bears in 1983.
Dent was a part of those ferocious Bears defense's in the mid-to late 80's including a 1985 Chicago squad that went 15-1 in route to capturing the Lomardi trophy in Super Bowl XX. In 1985, Dent led the NFL in sacks with 17 and garnered the Super Bowl MVP trophy after collecting two sacks, two forced fumbles, and blocked pass in the Bears 46-10 victory over the Patroits.
Before retiring in 1997, Richard won another Super Bowl this time with the Jerry Rice led San Francisco 49ers in 1994. During his career, his 137.5 sacks rank him third all-time ranking him behind Hall-of-Famers Reggie White and Bruce Smith.
Dent is still waiting on his call to the NFL Hall-of-Fame, but on February 15, 2008 he was elected to the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame. Be sure to come and meet Richard this Saturday night as he will be at the Dish Network concourse table located on the Alabama side of the Columbus Civic Center.
Gates open at 6:30 p.m. and the first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a free pink t-shirt in honor of "Cancer Awareness Night." The Lions will also be donning commemorative pink jersey's which will be auctioned of immediately following the game.
