
Johnstown Riverhawks Announce 'Riverhawks Foundation'

March 4, 2005 - The Johnstown Riverhawks indoor football team is please to announce the development of the "Riverhawks Foundation." "We believe that the foundation will provide our organization with an effective vehicle through which to impact the community in a positive manner," said Brian Schwelling the teams owner and founder of the foundation. The foundation's intial project is the development of the Pete Duranko Scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded at the annual Ken Lantzy Finest Forty All-Star game held on June 18th. "We will be seeking an administrator for the foundation," Schwelling added, "that position will be given on a voluntary basis."
Duranko, a Johnstown native, graduated from Johnstown Catholic High School where he excelled in basketball, track and football. He was an All-American football star at Notre Dame and a member of the 1966 championship team. Duranko went on to play seven sasons for the Denver Broncos of the National Football League.
Duranko was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Since diagnosed with ALS, Duranko began working with ALSA's Western Pennsylvania Chapter and has served as honorary of the chapter's Walk to D'feet ALS.
