Johnson to Change Roles with Titans

November 16, 2021 - National Basketball League of Canada (NBL Canada)
KW Titans News Release

The KW Titans can't wait to get back on the hardwood at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium with February 5, 2022 marking the date of the first home game.

Today, the Titan's Leadership Team are announcing that Cavell Johnson will be stepping away from the head coaching role for the upcoming season, due to other commitments.

Cavell will still be involved with the KW Titans fans and community engagement as time permits.

KW Titans Owner, Leon Martin shares his thoughts on the change:

"Cavell has been a member of the Titans Organization since its inaugural season. He has been an influential team member, coach, leader and true friend. During the changes and time away of the past two years, Cavell made the decision to remain a member of our community and establish roots. Cavell and I developed a friendship that extended beyond the court and I look forward to that continued growth. The connections he has made both personally and professionally have allowed him to create a future in the region. I thank him for his commitment to the success of the Titans and wish him continued success with the journey he has started in Waterloo Region. The Titans are excited for our return to the court, bringing back the action and family fun. We Are Titans!"

VP of Basketball Operations and General Manager, Mel Kobe shared:

"Cavell's leadership and commitment to being a part of our community helping others in a time of uncertainty shows his passion for residents and the betterment of Waterloo Region. He is passionate about seeing those around him develop and advance in life. Coach Johnson is a strong role model on and off the court. We look forward to seeing him continue to impact lives and help others around him grow. We are excited to continue to have him as part of the team in this new capacity."

In his first full season as a head coach, Cavell led the team to a second-round playoff berth knocking out the London Lightning in the first round, then taking the second round against the St. John's Edge to 6 games.

Cavell's commitment to community and inspiring others continued during the break from the court. Many have seen Cavell donating his time working with training youth in basketball skills, speaking on mental health, and working with the Women's Crisis Centre supporting those who are experiencing domestic violence in our community.

The KW Titans Leadership team will begin the search for the head coach role immediately.
