Newark Bears News Release

NEWARK, NJ- The defending Atlantic League Champion Newark Bears announced today that the club has re-signed veteran catcher John Pachot to a contract for the 2008 season. Pachot will be entering his 16th season in professional baseball, his third in the Atlantic League, and his second with the Bears.

A two-time Atlantic League All-Star, Pachot hit .258 with 6 home runs, 20 doubles, and 48 RBI with Newark a year ago, while providing tremendous defense behind the plate. In 2007, Pachot made only 5 errors all season, and posted an excellent .992 fielding percentage. He also threw out 50% of all attempted base stealers last season (38 of 76), far and away the best success rate of any Atlantic League catcher.

During the 2007 playoffs, Pachot tied for the team lead, and was second over all in the league, with 6 runs-batted-in, in 6 games played. He also hit a home run, had a pair of doubles, and batted .261.

"John was the foundation upon which our championship was built a year ago," said Bears Assistant General Manager of Baseball Operations Jim Cerny. "We are very happy to bring him back as we prepare to defend our title in 2008."

The 33 year-old Pachot has played in nearly 1,200 career games, and has five seasons of Triple-A experience. He was originally signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Montreal Expos in 1992, and he has played in seven different affiliated organizations since, including two seasons at Triple-A with the New York Mets. In 2006, Pachot was an Atlantic League All-Star while batting .282 with 10 home runs and 52 RBI for the Camden Riversharks.

The Bears open up defense of their 2007 Atlantic League Championship on Friday, April 25th against the Long Island Ducks before playing their home opener on Tuesday, April 29th at 7:05pm against the Bridgeport Bluefish at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
