Joerger Earns CBA Coach of the Year Honors

Cedar Rapids, IA (March 9, 2004) Today the Continental Basketball Association named current CBA Dakota Wizards and USBL Cedar Rapids River RaidersÂ’ Head Coach Dave Joerger as the CBA Coach of the Year. This is the second CBA Coach of the Year award that Joerger has earned in the three seasons Dakota has been with the CBA. The Wizards ended the regular season of play with a winning record of 34-14 and an average of 4.5 quarter points per game. He also kept that winning record through out the season while having six players called up to the NBA (Sean Lampley - Golden State Warriors, Oliver Miller - Minnesota Timberwolves, Kaniel Dickens - Portland Trail Blazers, Maurice Carter - Los Angeles Lakers, Eddie Gill - Portland Trail Blazers, Rodney Buford -Sacramento Kings) The CBA Coach of the Year award was voted on by CBA General Managers.

Since the Dakota Wizards joined the Continental Basketball Association (CBA) in 2001-2002 season, Joerger has earned six CBA Coach of the Month awards and led the Wizards to the CBA Championship (Â’01-Â’02). Joerger also led the CBA National All-Stars to two consecutive victories coaching during the 2002/2003 & 2003/2004 CBA All-Star Classics.

Joerger was named head coach of the Wizards in 2000 after serving as an assistant coach and general manager for 3 years with the organization. During the 2000-2001 season with Dakota, which at the time was a member of the International Basketball Association (IBA), Joerger was named the IBA Coach of the Year for leading the Wizards to the league title and posting the best record in the regular season (30-10). The Wizards then moved on to the CBA for the 2001-2002 season and the Wizards posted a league best 26-14 regular season record and Joerger, at 28, became the youngest coach in the CBA's 56-year history to win a league title.

During the 2002-2003 season the Wizards again posted the best regular season record at 31-14 and Joerger was named Coach of the Month 2 out of 4 months before falling in the conference finals.

The Dakota Wizards begin their playoff push against the Idaho Stampede in the first round of playoffs in Bismarck, ND Tuesday night, March 9. CBA playoffs consist of the first round best of five series with four teams and ends with one final game between the two winners from each bracket.

The River Raiders will start its inaugural 30 game regular season (15 home games) on Friday April 16, 2004 at 7:15 vs. the Oklahoma Storm at the U.S. Cellular Center in downtown Cedar Rapids.
