July 18, 2005 - Central Baseball League (Central League)
Pensacola Pelicans News Release

Shortstop Joe Espada and pitcher Santos Hernandez will represent the Pelicans as the best players from the Central League go head-to-head with the All-Stars of the Canadian-American League on Tuesday, July 19 at Campanelli Stadium in Brockton, Massachusetts.

Espada was named the CBL's starting shortstop after batting a league fifth best .345 during the season's first half. Espada also finished the first stanza second in the league with 15 stolen bases. He'll be seeing his first action in a CBL all-star event after being named to last year's post-season all-star team. Espada was also named an all-star in the Double-A Texas League in 1999.

Hernandez finished the first half tied with teammate Edwar Ramirez for the best ERA in the CBL at 2.31. He is currently 5-5 and second among active CBL pitchers with a 3.20 ERA and has struck out 67 batters in 70.1 innings. This will be Hernandez's second all-star game appearance after being named to the 2002 Single-A Pioneer League team.

2005 will mark the second consecutive season that the Can-Am and Central Leagues have met in an all-star event. Last season former Pelican Andy Wilson was named the game's most valuable player as the CBL prevailed 9-4 at LaGrave Field in Fort Worth, Texas.

The players and coaches will be introduced at the All-Star Luncheon on Tuesday and will feature ESPN's Peter Gammons as the guest speaker.

Pre-game events will feature a skills challenge and a homerun derby with players from both leagues participating.
