Reno Aces News Release

Phoenix, Ariz. - The Arizona Diamondbacks optioned right-handed pitchers Jimmie Sherfy and Joey Krehbiel to Triple-A Reno Friday morning.

Other notable transactions today include catcher Tyler Heineman and outfielders Andrew Aplin and Rob Refsnyder being reassigned to Minor League camp. The trio will likely begin the 2019 campaign in Reno.

Reliever Joey Krehbiel returns to Reno after being a large part of the Aces' bullpen a season ago. When a strikeout was needed, the righty was the guy. The power pitcher struck out 71 batters in 57.1 innings. He compiled a 3-3 record with a 4.24 ERA in 48 appearances in 2018. The 26-year-old made his Major League debut in July with a two-game stint out of the bullpen with the Diamondbacks.

Aces' all-time saves leader, Jimmie Sherfy, returns to Reno expecting to be the closer once again. He has closed out 47 games for the team since 2016. The Oregon product was extremely effective in the closer's role last year. He was 5-1 with a 1.60 ERA while converting 15 of 17 save opportunities. Batters hit just .190 off the righty and he struck out 58 in just 45 innings.

Catcher Tyler Heineman is new to Triple-A Reno this year. He signed a Minor-League contract with the Diamondbacks in November coming over from the Milwaukee Brewers organization. Splitting time between Triple-A Colorado Springs and Double-A Biloxi in 2018, Heineman hit .251 with four home runs, 24 RBIs, 30 runs scored and 40 walks.

Outfielder Andrew Aplin comes to Reno very familiar with the Pacific Coast League. Since 2014, he has spent parts of the last five seasons with Triple-A Oklahoma City, Fresno, and Tacoma.

The D-backs will be the fourth organization utility man Rob Refsnyder has spent time with since 2015. He played 166 games in the in the Major Leagues with the New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays and the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Aces open their 2019 season on Thursday, April 4 at 7:05 p.m. against the Fresno Grizzlies at Chukchansi Park and return for Opening Night on April 9th at Greater Nevada Field.
