Published on September 10, 2008 under Continental Basketball Association 1 (CBA 1) News Release
Albany, NY (September 10, 2008) - The Continental Basketball Association today announced that current CBA Acting Commissioner Jim Coyne has resigned to accept the position of President and General Manager of the Albany Patroons.
Coyne makes his return to the Patroons after spending the past season as the Acting Commissioner of the CBA. Coyne has a long and illustrious career in the CBA as an executive of the Patroons. He is a former Executive of the Year and was instrumental in bringing the Patroons to Albany in 1982. Coyne was also responsible for the hiring of Phil Jackson, George Karl and the late Bill Musselman as head coaches for the Patroons. In 2004, Coyne assisted in the purchase of the Patroons former home, the Washington Avenue Armory and the re-emergence of the Patroons in the CBA. From 2005-07, Coyne was the Patroons General Manager and under his guidance the Patroons captured the American Conference title and reached the 2007 CBA Playoff Finals.
"I am glad to be back with my first love, the Albany Patroons," said Coyne. "I enjoyed my time as Acting Commissioner but the Patroons are where my heart is and always will be. I want to return the Patroons to the place they were before I left, as a perennial power that is one of the favorites to capture the CBA Championship every year. We have some of the best fans in the world and I want to bring a Championship back to Albany."
"I am glad to have Jim return as President and General Manager of the Patroons," said Patroons Chairman of the Board Ben Fernandez. "He helped the CBA through a trying period, but I know he is happy to be back at the helm of the Patroons. Jim will concentrate on returning the Patroons to the CBA Championship."
"While I am sad to have Jim leave, I know he is returning to what he likes best, the Albany Patroons," said CBA Deputy Commissioner Dennis Truax. "He has been a steady hand in showing me the inner workings of the league office and I know if I need any help he will be able to help me. I know he will have the Patroons in the title hunt this year for sure."
