Fargo-Moorhead Jets News Release
Friday Night The Outlaws prevented the Jets from getting a successful landing, prevailing 4-3 over the Jets tonight at the Coliseum.
In the first period, the Jets seemed to take the upper hand right out of the gate. Roman Krivda (Ukraine) unleashed the first shot for the Jets at 16:14, followed by Jordy Trottier and Marc Mihulka. With a huge hit by Michael Benedict and a turnover at 11:30, the Jets were still strong halfway through the period.
Just after the ten minute mark, the Jets faltered a little when Andrew Muir missed a behind the back pass from Patrick Deitz (Moorhead, MN), but jumped right back on the horse and retaliated the turnover. Assisted by newcomer, Joe Beaudette (Blaine, MN), Robby Phillip (Thief River Falls, MN) and Andrew Muir (Hallock, MN) brought in the Jets' first goal at 9:04.
The puck went back and forth in the beginning of the second half of the period, but the Outlaws ended up taking the Jets' luster with 5:29 left as Bryant Scarda, pushed the puck past Okland's goalpost for a goal to tie the game at 1-1. Not only did the Outlaws see the Jets' goal, but they raised them another shorthanded goal from Ross Ring-Jarvi at the 3:09 mark to end the first period 2-1, North Iowa's advantage.
The Outlaws grabbed the first goal of the second period just 30 seconds in as Shea Walters let goal number three fly past Elliot Okland. Goalie Joe Dawson quickly replaced Okland within the first minute of the second period and hung tough throughout the rest of the game. Just after four minutes, the Jets' two Marks' brought a nice play together.
Using a beautiful set-up from Harrie, Mihulka was able to bring the score to
3-2 Outlaws. With just over seven minutes of play left, the Jets called the Outlaws' bet and made the score a tie game with an unassisted goal from Beaudette.
Entering the third period with a 3-3 tie game, the Jets seemed to lag behind a little bit, being unable to step up on any of the power play advantages. Rookie Justin Brausen racked hit after hit on the ice, but the score was deadlocked at 3 for over half the period. Play went back and forth until the Outlaws eventually pulled through for the lead. At exactly the four minute mark Travis Peckscamp sunk one into the net to put the Outlaws at 4-3. With a little over three minutes to tie the score back up, the Jets pulled Dawson to put a 6 on 5 man advantage in the Outlaw zone. The effort was in vain, as Beaudette's shot in the last second of the game blasted just wide of the post, leaving the Jets shot 4-3.
Saturday Night The Jets had a second chance to clear up the dispute with the Outlaws tonight, but failed to produce the desired results, ending the weekend stand with a 5-1 loss to North Iowa.
The first period face off went to the Jets, which gave them plenty of shots on goal, but Outlaw goalie Robby Moss continued to baffle the Jets' offense as shot after shot was saved. Within the first two minutes, the Outlaws snuck a goal past Jets goalie Joe Dawson. Credited to Krystian Dzubinski, the goal was assisted by AJ Knapp as Knapp took a shot and the puck deflected of Dzubinski and into the goal, bringing the Outlaws to an early lead at 1-0.
The Jets tried to rally back, but missed opportunity after opportunity through the crease on the centering passes. But not for long, just after 12 minutes into the period Roman Krivda got the Jets back in action with a goal with a pass by Justin Kirchevel. Thirty seconds later, the Jets decided to forgo their defense and had all forwards out on the ice to try to tie the game at 2-2. Tyler Klein came in big with a huge hit to Bryant Skarda, knocking him square off of his feet. A scuffle with three minutes left on the clock left Jets Sean McNeely and Outlaws Bobby Moe in the box with roughing penalties. With a four on four man game, neither the Jets nor the Outlaws were given an opportunity to score. Ending the period at even strength, the Jets trailed the Outlaws 2-1.
With a bang, the second period started as the Outlaws won the face off and brought the puck down to the Jets' zone with gusto. Fortunately, Dawson was able to ward off all shots to keep the score at 2-1. At the 18:30 mark, Trottier shot a near-goal that ricocheted off the post, but back into play. The Jets decided to put all forwards in again 30 seconds later, but to no avail as every wrap-around opportunities were shoved back in their faces.
As the puck flew back and forth across the ice, it was difficult for either team to make any progress. In the second half of the period, though, play got much more exciting. With a plethora of awesome hits from the Jets, the Outlaws had a hard time staying on their feet. Both Andrew Harrison and Roman Krivda got turnover breakaways but couldn't make anything happen. The period came to a close with a double penalty to the Jets, making it a five on three man game to the Outlaws' advantage, which gave them plenty of chances for shots on goal.
Dawson wasn't the only one making big saves tonight, though. The goal post came through huge tonight, too, as the Outlaws' third potential goal was knocked out off the corner of the post. The Jets were able to stave off the five on three to bring it back to five on four, and finally back to full strength. With the puck stuck behind the Jets' goal zone, the period ended scoreless for both teams, keeping the game locked at 2-1.
The third period began with the Outlaws winning the face off and keeping the puck in the Jets' zone for most of the period. The Jets tried to attack early, but the Outlaws quickly put a stop to it by rolling them under the bus with two goals from Shea Walters at 18:41 and 4:17 and the game winning goal from Alex Carlson, which brought the score to 5-1. Frustrated with the progress of the game Justin Kirchevel ended his game prematurely at the 2:30 mark and Andrew Muir was put in the penalty box, leaving the Jets at a disadvantage for the rest of the game. The game ended with four Jets on the ice and a 5-1 loss.
Forget to Remember November The Jets are 1-5 thus far and have been outscored 25-12 while the power-play has slipped to 17%. It wasn't too long ago the Jets were tops in the league in the power-play and goals for which is now water under the bridge.
Engines Cooling Down The offense played well at times on Friday and rebounded from a 3-1 hole in the opening seconds of the second period as Joe Dawson replaced Okland. Dawson then earned the nod for Saturday's match but was ousted 5-1 as Moss continued his mastery of the Jets.
Injury Report The Jets were without F Mike Schumacher yet again as his separated shoulder remained tender. Schumacher took an open ice hit in Southern Minnesota four weeks ago. F Andy Dittus will be held out until after Christmas with a broken collar bone.
Look Around the League
Southern MN vs. Springfield W 6-3 and W 8-5
Bismarck vs. Alexandria W 7-1 and W 4-3
This Weekend Series The Jets head to Mason City for another set with the North Iowa Outlaws. If the first two meetings weren't a wake up call then I don't know what is as the Jets were outscored 16-4. Do the math and you get a pretty good beating at 4-1. This could be what the team needs by playing the best in the division as it will only make then better.
