Johnstown Tomahawks News Release
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - Despite an energetic sell-out crowd at the Cambria County War Memorial Saturday night, the Johnstown Tomahawks could not shoot down the surging Janesville Jets, falling 2-1.
After a hard fought first period which left the teams in a scoreless tie, the scoring opened up in the second when Janesville forward Kyle Patava took a hard pass from winger Robin Hoglund and knocked a point blank shot past Johnstown goalie Alex Okicki at 1:44 into the period.
With tensions rising, Johnstown tied the game at 1-1 with a hard wrist shot by Johnstown defenseman Shane Cuckovich that found its mark past the glove of Janesville's Logan Halladay with 1:56 left in the period. Cuckovich's goal, his fourth of the season, was assisted by Zach Wallace.
Janesville reclaimed the lead early in the third period, when forward Jordan Himley collected a rebound that teammate Alex Smith shot off Okicki's right pad at 0:55 and snapped it into the back of the net to pull ahead 2-1.
The Tomahawks managed just four shots through the remaining minutes of the game, but did manage to generate several scoring opportunities, including a Tyler Basham breakaway that couldn't find its way past Halladay.
Okicki was just as strong in the opposite net, turning away 28 of 30 Janesville shots on the night, including many spectacular saves that drew cheers from the 3,721 in attendance.
Both teams were scoreless on the powerplay throughout the night, with each team drawing just two man-advantage opportunities.
The loss was the second of the series and fourth regulation loss in a row for the Tomahawks (26-23-4, 56) points, who remain in third place in the North Division with seven games remaining in the regular season. Janesville (26-23-3, 55 points) pulls within one point of Johnstown with the win.
The Tomahawks head to Springfield next weekend to take on the Jr. Blues and return to the War Memorial March 21-23 for Fan Appreciation Weekend against the Soo Eagles. For tickets and information, call 814-536-4625.
